Write things down to make them happen. It's a practice that transforms your thoughts and intentions into something tangible. It brings clarity and perspective to your goals. Simplistic and specific objectives are much easier for your brain to process, clearing away the mental inhibitions that are often associated with larger and more vague goals. Remove the barriers to your success. Still working on that New Year's resolution? Make a written plan of action. Thinking about tonight's reps and sets of push-ups? Write them down and cross each set off as you finish them.  Use these motivational notebooks to help you kick your mind into gear for good.

A journey to self love : How to blossom in all aspects of your life

A journey to self love : How to blossom in all aspects of your life

Quote-3.jpg

Although it can be difficult at first, self-love is something that everyone should invest in. It’s similar to coming out of a dark place and into the light. Though it may hurt your eyes at first, you soon realize that the magnificent view was worth it. My journey to self love started when I decided that I could not move forward without making peace with my past. I tried to jump on the road to happiness several times, but I always stumbled and fell whenever I encountered the tiniest cracks, not knowing why and blaming myself for being weak. I realized then that I owed myself to stop for a moment. I needed to look back just long enough to understand and learn where I came from and where I was heading. I stopped being selfish and started being generous instead: with my time, energy and, most of all, patience. It’s something I have always neglected. That’s how my journey to self-love and self-improvement finally began.

A journey to self love // The PumpUp Blog

It’s a never-ending road. It’s a road that’s meant to make you finally understand the deepest layers of your soul. I have learned so much since I adopted this lifestyle and became a much happier and healthier person. I read somewhere that “being happy is a very personal thing, and it really has nothing to do with anyone else”. These words still resonate in my mind. Every single day, they remind me that I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. I owe it to myself to be genuine.

A journey to self love // The PumpUp Blog

I still get angry, sad or frustrated sometimes, but I have learned to accept these emotions. I no longer run from them or repress them. Feeling that way doesn’t mean that you are failing. It means you are still on this amazing journey and you are not willing to give up even if you stumble a little. Be gentle, be honest to yourself and allow yourself to feel everything.

Acknowledge every emotion and question why are you feeling it. When it’s possible, do something about it. It’s not too late for anything. It’s never late to become who you want to become. If you need to apologize, apologize. If you need to thank someone for a gesture they made months or even years ago, don’t waste any second longer. If you feel like it’s the right thing to do and it will make you feel lighter or happier, do it.

A journey to self love // The PumpUp Blog

But burn bridges if you must. Eliminate the negativity and cut it out of your life without feeling guilty. It can be scary, but it is worth it. You need to protect yourself and immerse yourself in a healthy and positive environment that allows you to grow and blossom, just like a cute little plant. That was a very important step for me. Once I did it, I felt so much better. Sooner than you think, your energy will attract similar positive energies and will slowly distance itself from the negative ones. Surround yourself with good people, listen more and learn. Never stop learning, never stop growing and don’t let anyone ever take away from you the chance to do and be better.

Last but not least, I am here to tell you that no matter how many times you give up or fall and feel like you hit rock bottom, there is a way to get back on your feet and stand back up again. As Beau Taplin said, ”(…) Your body is not a temple. Temples can be destroyed and desecrated. Your body is a forest – thick canopies of maple trees and sweet scented wildflowers sprouting in the underwood. You will grow back, over and over, no matter how badly you are devastated.” Rely on your bones, flesh and blood, but most of all, your mind. Every tiny cell in your body is working so hard to keep you alive and your mind – your mind can do wonders. Love each of them back, as they unconditionally love you. Love yourself and become invincible.

PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem

PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem

Saturday-10AM-2.png

Take care of how you speak to yourself. You are not a mistake or a problem to be solved. You're capable! Rather than focusing on what you dislike about your body, focus on what you do like. Your capabilities and small achievements will propel you further than you could have ever imagined. We asked the PumpUp community about their best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem during their health and fitness journey and here's what they had to say: Hate versus Love. Take care of how you speak to yourself // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem

Hate: "I am stupid for making this mistake." Love: "I am human, I make mistakes. I'll make an effort to do better next time." Remember, you are worth it.  - PumpUp member @millybedilly

You have an infinite power that can make or break you. Control your emotions and be the champion of your own life // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem

You have this incredible, infinite power within you that can literally make or break you. Confidence starts from within and not from external things. Once you realize that you have the choice to control your emotions, you will be the champion of your own life! Tap into your power because you can do amazing things! - @plantbasedbabe

You are still beating the old you // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem
Your speed doesn’t matter, forward is forward. Don’t beat up yourself trying to be like somebody else! Your progress is yours and nobody can’t take that away from you. There’s no place to go but forward. You’re still beating the old you, the one who always had an excuse; the one who said 'Tomorrow, I’m eating healthy'; the one who said, 'I’ll hit the gym next week, next summer, next year'. You and only you have the power to make your life extraordinary. Don’t wait for somebody to tell you this and make you see your potential. It’s all on you! Don’t give up. - @daphnec
No matter how fast you run, you're still lapping everybody on the couch // PumpUp's best advice for anybody with low self esteem
Even if you go slow, you’re still lapping everyone who’s on the couch. No matter how heavy you lift, how fast or slow you run, how many squats you do, or how often you exercise, it doesn’t matter. you’re trying and making an effort to better yourself, which is a huge step that so many people don’t take -@karak
Every downhill has an uphill // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self esteem
Be patient, just stay positive about life. Life is hard if you think everything is going to be about and rainbows and happiness. You’re thinking wrong. Change your attitude. Remember that every downhill has an uphill. You just need to change directions and put a little more effort so that push through anything you’re going through. - @marianarobledosegura
Take all the negativity from your life and make it your strength. Follow your dreams & make them a reality. Most of all, believe in yourself because if you don't, no one else will.  Surround yourself with positive people who believe in you. Do not strive for perfection but strive for greatness. Write your own story and keep your eyes on your goal. You never know who you are inspiring.
Chiara Pereira
If it doesn't lift you up, ditch it. - @hisroyal10ness

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours

image1.jpg

I have always known that it is so important not only to live my dreams, but to encourage others to fulfill theirs. When I was teaching high school eurythmy, choir and gardening in Hawaii, I always worked in this way with my students, to encourage them to take their dreams and goals seriously. There is an importance to the wisdom of parents, but from a teacher's perspective, I've often seen that many parents seem to be trying to fulfill themselves through their children. If this is the case, I think it is wrong, and puts an unhealthy and untruthful pressure on young people. Of course they want to make their parents happy- but what about themselves? The children have to live with themselves for the rest of their life. I had some students who were so depressed and worried because they felt like they had to go to college to please someone, when what they really wanted to do was work with a master surfboard maker or travel the world. I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours, too. // bodysoulspiritfitness for The PumpUp Blog

To think your dreams are impossible is often a conception brought through society and education. Older people inform the younger that when you get older, you learn that your ideals aren’t realistic. This is exactly the sort of attitude that got those pessimistic people so unenthusiastic about life. It is not easy to stand up for or live your ideals, sure- but anyone willing to take on challenges in their life WILL succeed. I’m pretty sure life isn’t meant to be easy. We learn the most and gain the most valuable aspects of ourselves when it is not.

The experience one has when you have reached a goal, unfolded a dream, or upheld an ideal close to your heart, is one of the highest feelings of the soul. To have created an intention once, and through life’s work and adventures finally found your way to its fruition, is a glorious and happy moment. It can be simple: one of my dreams since I was a teenager was to design and sew my own wedding dress if I ever got married. My wedding is in a month and I just finished the dress of my dreams. I wasn’t sure if I could even do it, for one wants everything to be perfect for that special moment; but it happened and passed my quality test with flying colors. I cannot wait to stand in it before my future husband, friends, and family, and be humbly proud that I can wear a beautiful garment I created out of 15 yards of silk and 5 yards of cotton lace.

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours, too. // bodysoulspiritfitness for The PumpUp Blog

Each of us has so many goals and dreams, of all different sizes, and you just have to figure out when to tackle each one. As you fulfill them, it will give you strength and encouragement, as well as the knowledge that all things are possible when you don’t give up. It’s rarely easy, but it is always worth it. Happiness is the best sustenance for health.

The act of comparison is an act of violence against the self. Be your own cheerleader. Stop comparing yourself with others and focus on how you can become the best version of you. A fitness community can help you to realize the futility of comparison. Instead, embrace your personal victories and combat your challenges head-on. Don't compare your chapter one to somebody else's chapter 50. Here's a collection of the best motivational quotes that will help you to stop comparing yourself with others.

What does independence mean to you?

What does independence mean to you?

Screen-Shot-2015-07-06-at-7.34.57-PM.png

The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself. On Independence Day, we asked the PumpUp community "What does independence mean to you?".  Here are some of their beautiful answers. Independence is having the ability to think for yourself and do things for yourself with freedom, without fear of retribution. It's the freedom to chase one's dreams. It's the freedom to be who you want to be and not be judged, while respecting the rights and beliefs of others. - @excoach

To me, independence means fully accepting and loving myself for who I am and having the freedom to make the right choices in terms of health and nutrition because of that. It means not having to give a [sh**] about what other people want me to do or think that it's bad for me. Rather, it's me making my own decisions. And I'm truly grateful for that. There are too many unhappy people trying to put others down. Independence starts when we choose not to accept that. - @ms_al

Independence is enjoying life to the fullest. To overcome any obstacle that comes your way. To be independent with the strength and willpower that you have as a person. To love and care for yourself. To not be judged by the color of your skin, by the way you look, or by your sexuality. Independence is being able to make choices for yourself and better understand what you need in life. Independence means to love one another, even in a world of violence. Independence is coming together as one, bringing people up and not down. - @fitness_ethomas

https://instagram.com/p/xNtXPxRvwX/?taken-by=deathtostock

Independence is relying on yourself and not on others. You look for family and friends to stand beside you for support, but do not need them to hold you up. Independence is knowledge, freedom, empowerment, and ambition that is embraced and not bestowed upon you. Real independence is earned, not given. - @elena_elise

Independence is the freedom to choose your own path, whether it be right or wrong. You do not depend on others to make decisions for you. It allows you to break free of the norm. It's your path, your choice, your independence. - @aanthony18

Independence means to be free to be how you were created to be. Freedom to live life to the fullest, love passionately and deeply, and reach out to those who are forgotten. Independence means having the opportunity to change the world, one day and one action at a time. - @triplettmom

Independence means that you can stand on your own two feet. you may be supported by others, but you do not rely on them. If they let you go, you are still strong enough to make your own decisions, to do things by yourself. - @louisetheunis

The power of positive words : learning to believe in yourself

The power of positive words : learning to believe in yourself

quote4.jpg

Words have the ability to pick somebody up or tear somebody down. We all have the opportunity to think about what we are about to say before we say it. The same mouth that shoots out negative words also has the ability to shoot out positive ones. The choice as to which version will come out our mouths will first start from the inside: from our minds and hearts. Sometimes, mental barriers get in the way of our ambitions. In order to change the mind, we must speak words of power. Phrases like “I can”, “ I will”, and “there is no stopping me” will kick your doubt into the dust. When we identify what the mind is trying to do to us negatively, we are able to take control and take action.  This concept can help us to make our minds stronger and help us to speak words of power not only to ourselves, but to others.

If I came up to you and sincerely said, I believe in you, you'll probably think that I lost my mind. You'll be wary because I don't know you, nor what you've been through, and yet I'm still insisting that I believe in you.  If I was to take it a step further and told you every day that I believe in you, your mind will start to think positively. You will tell yourself, if they believe in me, then I must be doing something positively. You'll start to believe in yourself too.

We are programmed to immediately see negative aspects about ourselves. The negative words that people use to describe us tend to take power over us. We can rein that power back into our hands by using equally effective words. Words like:

NO – I will not believe the negative words that you are saying to me

Or

YES – “I am strong”; “I will prevail”; “I am capable!” “I got this!”

Choose your words wisely and think before speaking. Use those powerful words for good. Speak them loud and speak them proud. Watch the magic happen in your life and those you have the ability to affect. Positive words are effective; positive words are contagious, positive words are powerful!

Why you should dare to believe in yourself

Why you should dare to believe in yourself

Screenshot_2015-06-10-13-59-44.jpg

Do your nerves become tangled in a panic when somebody challenges you to a dare? When the words "I dare you" are uttered, you have a decision to make. Whether you choose to take up the dare or not, your outcome will be positive or negative. How do you normally respond to a dare? What determines your outcome? What will your outcome be? I dare you to believe in yourself. Here's one option. When you choose not to believe in yourself, you might collapse under pressure whenever you don't accomplish a goal. It will overwhelm you mentally, affecting every physical component of your workout.  If you don’t believe that you can overcome any situation or achieve a goal, negative self-talk will drain your drive to succeed. The positive thing is that you can dare to believe in yourself instead.

Here's what happens when you do believe in yourself. Everything will come full circle (and in ways you could never have imagined).  You'll approach life with an extra intensity and the rewards will multiply. You can actively refute critics who don't believe in your dreams. You'll allow your self-belief to carry you through every workout and every healthy decision. Barriers that stood in the way of prosperity and your destiny are now at your feet experiencing their harsh demise.

I dare you to believe. Believe that you can do whatever it is you put your heart to. I dare you to believe that you are worth more than money can buy.  I dare you to believe that your life is worth living for and fighting for. I dare you to believe that now is the time for change in your life. I dare you to believe you can remove obstacles in your life to get to the peace and success that is awaits you. Dare to believe. I dare you.

Why I refuse to give up on myself: my journey at six months

Why I refuse to give up on myself: my journey at six months

DeathtoStock_EnergyandSerenity10.jpg

I have a confession: I feel like I have fallen off the wagon a little bit. My life has been so busy the past month, and I haven’t devoted the time that I deserve to focus on healthy choices. I have missed days at the gym, and I have made poor food choices. Part of me panics that I have regressed to my old ways. Even though I’m worried, I know that I’ll be okay. I won't give up on myself. Luckily, I have a great accountability group and newfound confidence in myself. I made a lot of progress in the first half of 2015. I lost 25 pounds and 19 inches across my entire body. What’s more, I developed a lot of healthy habits. However, I’m kind of stuck right now. In the past, when I hit a bump like this, I’d totally revert back to my old ways. Although I made some bad choices, I still devote at least three nights to the gym on weeks that I miss some time. I still continue to lift weights. This week, I started lifting heavier weights. I know that I’m continuing to make progress, but it is definitely slow.

I would not be prepared for this bump in the road if I had not decided to tackle the mental component of my journey from the beginning. I will not give up on myself this time. I refuse to. I know what I am capable of, and it’s pretty awesome.

Here is my promise to myself: I will take the next week to truly reflect on what is going on with me. I want to determine if I am just busy, or if I’m starting to self-sabotage like I have done so many times in the past. If it is really because I am busy, I will renew my priorities and start scheduling in some time for me and meal prepping.

The fact that I am admitting out loud (and to the world wide web, no less) that I am struggling is a new move for me. Usually, when I start to self-sabotage, I will keep it bottled up deep inside to try and fool even myself. Not this time. I’m on to you, mind games. We’ve been working too hard to turn back around now.

Giving up is always an option, but never my choice // The PumpUp Blog

That is why having a good support system is so important. I love the PumpUp community for this very reason. People notice when someone is struggling, and there are so many people willing to offer kind words and uplifting support. So take the time to reach out to a friend today. It takes hardly any time at all, and believe me: it could make all the difference in the world.

Just this morning, while I was writing this post, @operationskinnythighs tagged me in a post about setting goals for the rest of 2015. I want to thank her, because I needed this push toward mental focus. And that support is exactly what I’m talking about. The helpful and healthful community surrounding me keeps me strong. Whether it be friends I’ve made through the app, or the awesome people who continue to read my blog and share tips and encouragement, you guy’s don’t know how much you’ve changed my life. I know I’ll be okay. I won't give up on myself because of all the support. How can I not believe in myself when so many people also believe in me?

So, without further ado, here are my goals for the remainder of 2015:

My fitness goals for the last 1/2 of 2015 -Kaycee // the PumpUp blog

  1. Squat at least 120 lbs
  2. Complete a 10K
  3. Fit into size 12 jeans for the first time in my adult life
  4. Run a 13 minute mile.

I’m pretty sure I can do it, and I’d love to hear your goals for the rest of the year!

Lack motivation? Learn how to control the situation

Lack motivation? Learn how to control the situation

Screenshot_2015-05-28-09-46-57.jpg

Sometimes we try to control things that we don’t have any power over. This can overwhelm us with feelings of disappointment, causing us to act out of character.  Everybody responds differently to a loss of control. Learning about our triggers can help us to pinpoint the mechanisms of our discomfort and our loss of motivation. In my experience, the people who have control over you don’t realize how much they influence your behaviour. When somebody shares a strong remark with you, the phrase may still resonate with you years into the future. While they probably forgot about the whole event, it might still be tearing you down. You will bring exactly what they said to light and eventually assume that identity.

This is why a positive fitness community is so important.  If you're in a fitness environment full of doubters who watch, stare, and judge your every action, it'll influence your behaviour. Instead of powering through your workout, you lose focus and become concerned about the negative energy around you. The burning sweat that you bring to the gym will transform into a cold chill of worry, anger and frustration. In reality, none of this is happening.

I am here to tell you that the control is yours. Feel the way you want to feel, no matter what anyone says. You have the control to pick yourself up, dust the negativity off, and get back in the game. Nobody else has the right to control your emotions. You earn your progress. You live your progress. You have the ability to control your the emotions that stem from your progress. Control is yours for the taking, if you choose to accept it.

4 surprising reasons why beauty and confidence are linked

4 surprising reasons why beauty and confidence are linked

Screen-Shot-2015-05-25-at-3.23.27-PM-e1432663131669.png

People say that inner beauty is reflected in how people look on the outside. But the opposite also rings true. When you’re looking your best, you end up feeling good. Beauty and confidence are linked in less obvious ways that you'd think. Physical beauty jump-starts your confidence

Physical beauty gives you confidence gif via Crushable

If you’ve ever experienced ashy or acne-prone skin, you’ll know how it can zap your confidence. Likewise, when your skin is clear, you feel better. You exhibit a range of behaviours that indicate this: you'll hold your head up high and make eye-contact with people, rather than attempting to hide your face.   When you identify the aspects of your appearance that dissolve your confidence, you might be able to give your self-esteem a necessary boost. If you have an ashy complexion that causes your skin to look dull, skin lightening creams that make your skin more luminous may help. In turn, this may relieve any built-up tension you feel towards yourself.

A study found that when men wore a scented product, women found them more attractive - even though they could not smell them! The reason? The men carried themselves with confidence, which had the effect of increasing their physical appeal to people they interacted with. Even psychologists backed this up, saying that grooming rituals can help to boost your confidence levels in the short term.

Spiritual beauty helps you think more positively

Spiritual beauty makes you feel good gif via Buzzfeed

Although spiritual beauty is mostly an inside job - you should nurture your soul with goodness, find goodness in the world and spread kindness - some of it is definitely linked to how you react to your appearance. Sometimes people look at themselves in the mirror and only see negative things. Self-criticism can make you feel judged by yourself, which will launch you into bad mood territory. How are you supposed to be kind to others when you can’t be kind to yourself Start looking for things you love about your appearance when you glance at your reflection - your shiny eyes, your glowing skin, your beautiful smile - because it will stimulate the reward system in your brain. Remember that you can’t send out love if you don’t have some of it set aside in your soul for yourself!

Spiritual beauty can also enhance your physical beauty

When you cultivate your spiritual beauty, this can enhance your physical beauty. Your appearance radiates what is going on within your soul. Having inner serenity will reflect in how you look. You will appear composed, calm, and you'll walk tall. If you're stressed, the consequences can reveal themselves in various ways. A few examples? Wrinkles from frowning, bitten-down nails, and skin issues.

Looking after your body makes you look and feel good, period.

The interesting thing about inner and outer beauty is that they're linked. If you care about your body by leading a healthy lifestyle, this will make you healthier and feel good (especially if you're part of a fitness community). It’s a positive chain reaction. Focus on healthy lifestyle habits that encourage physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and your soul will shine.

Beauty and confidence are strongly linked, sometimes more than we realize. Focusing on strengthening physical and spiritual beauty will enable you to take beautiful flight in the amazing person you are.

What happens when you learn to take yourself just as you are

What happens when you learn to take yourself just as you are

There is only one you. Take yourself just as you are. No matter how hard we try to turn ourselves into something different, the reality is that we are who we are. The beauty of it is is that we are all unique and beautifully crafted. Being who you are will allow others to see a different perspective on life. It allows for you to show talents that you cultivated for yourself, and somebody else can benefit from it. Cherishing that piece of you will allow others to see that they do not have to act different to be accepted. Challenging the odds takes on a new meaning for somebody who accepts things as they are and for who they are.

Bettering our self-image or our self-esteem is always a great thing. Striving every day to be better than who you were the previous day is a challenge, but it's rewarding. Be cautious: striving to be the best shouldn’t mean that you're trying to be someone different. It's not fair to give off a wrong impression.

The poem below sums up exactly what it means to take yourself just as you are. Others will have no choice but to follow suit. Some won't like it; most will try to change it; few will accept it; all will have to respect it.

Take Me, As I am

Accept Me, As I am

Criticize Me, As I am

Compliment Me, As I am

We are like no other, as we are uniquely designed.

We are like no other, no other in mind.

Live life to the fullest as best as you can.

We are born to live life, Just As I am.

Displaying the true you will not only bring more people your way, it will allow others to see their own self-worth. Who you are will matter. Who you are will be noticed. Who you are will be rewarded. You will be accepted one way and one way only when you learn to take yourself, just as you are.
