How Megan got Healthy in College

In high school, Megan was an incredibly active athlete. She was a talented gymnast, a diver, and a swimmer. But once college started, Megan decided to put physical activity on the back burner. What's more, her eating habits fell off track because of the cafeteria food from her college dorm. "I was going to focus on finding what else I was passionate about, and I wasn't going to do any sports," she recalled. "For the first weeks of Freshman year, I felt like I was missing something." With the help of the PumpUp community, Megan eased back into the rhythm of living a more active and balanced lifestyle. "I got back into the swing of things and I ended up doing cardio at least 5 days a week," she recalled. "I love to go on PumpUp whenever I am bored or looking for motivation to get out of bed and go to the gym in the morning." At first, Megan was nervous about working out in her campus recreation centre. She felt like she was out of place and unknowledgeable about weightlifting. Thanks to the PumpUp community, Megan now wakes up at 5:00 in the morning to exercise at the gym. She combines group fitness classes at her campus recreation centre with strength training, cardio, and healthy eating. "I love to follow other people's journeys and give them encouragement," she shared. "I know that finding a motivation from others on PumpUp really helped me to get my fitness journey started. I would like to continue to find motivation for others but also want to try and motivate others and teach others to love themselves."

Moving forward, Megan hopes that she can motivate other members on PumpUp to be the best versions of themselves. "I don't like seeing people on PumpUp apologizing for not posting or for missing a workout," she revealed. "You should never feel sorry for being healthy. You are doing this for you, and not for anybody else. Even though I took a break from PumpUp for one year, I still found so much motivation from seeing how well others were doing and how much progress they had made. I now look forward to posting a picture every day that I do a work out because I hope that I can have a positive impact on someone else by helping to motivate them."

Megan's Best Advice
Listen to your body. If you are exhausted and do not feel like working out, you deserve to rest. If you feel full, stop eating because that is what is best for your body. You need to learn to love and respect your body because if you don’t, then you won’t look forward to working out or eating clean. If you listen to what your body wants, then you'll have more positive motivation to become healthier. Take pictures of yourself. Without seeing some of my own “before and after” pictures, I would not have believe that I looked any different at all.

Megan's Biggest Motivation

One of my biggest motivations is to try to love myself. I am the only one who can take care of my body. We only get one body and one chance to really take care of it, so I want to respect and love it. I don’t really have a specific person who motivates me to work out. In general, my boyfriend is one of my biggest role models. He also stands up for what he believes in and makes sure that his voice is heard, and to me, that is really inspirational.

Megan's Favorite Workout Routine

I absolutely LOVE Fitnessblender workouts. Fitness Blender was founded by a couple, Daniel and Kelli, who make free workouts and post them on their website:  I love it because they have such a variety of routines that range from stretching to HIIT to strength training and so much more. You can plan out what you want your schedule to look like and they are very motivational.

More about Megan

I have so many random facts about myself! I can make a four leaf clover with my tongue, I love learning about people which lead me to my major (Human Development and Family Studies), I am going to be an orientation leader at my university this Summer of 2016 (WOOHOO!), I love the colors blue and green, and I love animals! Fun fact: my PumpUp username is from my Tumblr. I combined my name with the word dinosaur and that is where that fun name came from.
