There is no 'right way' to cope with the death of a loved one. When Mariah's brother passed away, she turned to food as a source of comfort. "I gained 20 lbs just trying to make myself feel better after the loss of my brother," she said solemnly. "Relatives and friends would constantly bring food over, and I would eat it all. It got out of hand." This past year, on the date of her late brother's birthday, Mariah decided that enough was enough. She made a commitment to change her lifestyle not only for her own wellbeing, but to also honour the memory of her brother. "It makes me happy knowing that he would be proud of me, and that he'll finally get to see me succeed [with] my weight loss journey," she enthused.
With the help of the PumpUp community, Mariah transformed her sorrow into strength. "These past 6 months, the PumpUp community helped me to eat right," she insisted. "Before PumpUp, I ate a bag of hot fries literally everyday. I hardly ever worked out, I constantly drank soda, and I never paid attention to damage I was inflicting on my body." Mariah used to have trouble running for longer than 5 minutes. Now, Mariah runs 3 miles easily. "I wanted to see if anybody else's healthy journey could motivate me to reach my goals," she explained. "I find a wide variety of new workouts and recipes from other PumpUp members. I now try my best to exercise every day. I run, do a workout for my abs, and do upper body exercises with dumbbells."
Maintaining a healthier lifestyle isn't easy, but Mariah was able to do it with hard work, dedication, and willpower. "With love from God and the entire PumpUp community, you can and will reach your goal," Mariah insisted. "I started at 205 lbs [when I began my journey with PumpUp] and now I'm at 165 lbs. I've lost 45 lbs. I'm not where I used to be and I need to keep pushing myself until I reach my ultimate goal."
Mariah's motivational mantra
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." - James 1:2-3 You will have moments when you fall and feel like you can't get back up, but that's just an obstacle that you have to overcome and look at as a challenge.
Mariah's biggest motivation
My biggest motivation would have to be my brother. He was my best friend and mentor and when it came to me losing weight he was always so supportive, even when I did fail. I had tried to lose weight a million times before and always failed but now I'm finally stable.
Mariah's favorite workout
It would have to be my usual running 3-4 miles and abs. I enjoy running a lot because it relieves me whenever I'm stressed about something and it helps to clear my mind.
Fun fact about Mariah
I DO NOT like chocolate. To me it tastes so bitter, so I'm not much of a candy person. I guess that's a good thing!
