Love yourself: my thoughts on body image

This is a guest post by Abigail, of Oh You Pretty Things (a style, health, and beauty blog)

This past week I’ve seen a lot of little quotes that I thought were very inspirational. Here are just a few I liked and my thoughts on them.

“A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it.  It just blooms”

Jealousy consumes society.  Instead of just doing our own thing, girls compete with each other over everything.  I completely understand having icons, inspirations, and fashion idols, but one of the most relieving days is the day when you learn to love yourself.   You were born with pale skin? Well, pale is beautiful! You were born with olive skin? Well, tan is gorgeous!  When you stop trying to change yourself to look like someone else, you will realize that there is no one like you.  And how awesome is that?!

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”

I always heard this saying when I was younger, but I never really  knew what it meant.  Even just a year ago I never really understood the actual meaning.   Being in high school and around my friends makes me realize how true this statement is.  For example, I can over hear my guy friends talk about how pretty girls are, yet they all have different opinions and think different girls are pretty in different ways.  Key word, DIFFERENT.  Everyone is different, and one day you will find someone who loves you exactly how you are (because beauty is in the eye of the beholder) Get it? ( and yes I believe everyone has a soul mate!)

“If only our eyes saw souls instead of bodies, how very different our ideals of beauty would be”

Society has changed body image for every girl. The body type portrayed in advertising as the ideal is possessed naturally by only 5% of American females. Meaning that very, very, very few girls are going to look like models (and most are the models) Not that they aren’t gorgeous, because everyone can appreciate their bodies, but it’s good to know that that is not the “average” body type. I think it is very important to take care of your body and to stay fit and healthy, yet you can never look exactly like someone else,  so learn to love yourself!

Don’t try too hard to get a guy’s attention or compete with other girls, but work on changing your mindset, rather than your appearance.  Confidence comes from being happy with yourself, and is often the most attractive aspect of a girl.  Sometimes the guru in me comes out! The weekend is right around the corner, and you can make it. Have a great day!
