With ice hockey as his only form of exercise since the age of 4, Thomas felt like something was amiss. “I didn’t follow any type of meal plan, I ate what I wanted and when I wanted, and I never consumed enough calories,” he remembered. “I started using PumpUp about 3 years after I made the decision to begin my fitness journey. I felt insecure all the time and I truly wanted confidence. I wanted to look in the mirror and love what I saw. I wanted to be proud of who I was, physically and mentally."
A high intensity interval training program called p90X was the starting point for Thomas. In his freshman year, he and his roommate committed to doing the program for 90 days straight and afterwards, he started working out at his local gym. “I was skinny my entire life,” he lamented. “I was never overweight, but I was nonetheless unhappy with the body I had. My best friend Kris and I started out barely being able to curl 10 lb dumbbells and we couldn’t bench press half of our body weight. Over the years, we figured out what worked and what didn’t work for us.”
Maintaining enough calories to gain weight was the hardest part of Thomas’s fitness journey. “I learned quickly that no matter how hard I worked out, I would never get stronger [if I didn’t] fuel my body with enough calories and nutrients,” he shared. “It took a lot of trial and error, but I feel like I truly figured out what worked for me and how to reap the most rewards through diet and exercise.”
One year ago, Thomas’s best friend Kris introduced him to PumpUp. “I loved the idea of being part of a community of people coming together to share their fitness journeys,” he insisted. “I think it is crucial to the success of many people to be motivated, inspired, and cheered on and that is what PumpUp is all about!” Using PumpUp, Thomas’s main goal is to inspire as many people as he can. "I truly appreciate all the support I've been given through PumpUp and all the inspiring stories I have seen through the years,” he said. "I still have to smile every single time I see a transformation story of someone else changing their life because that's what this is all about: helping yourself, helping others and being fit together! I am in the process of being a certified personal trainer and have helped many people with meal planning and exercise routines. There is no better feeling than being a part of someone's fitness journey."
Thomas’s Best Advice
"Find out your "WHY"! WHY do you want to work out and be healthy? Once you find a Why, your motivation will be there. My Why was because I hated being underweight. It all begins with yourself: nobody is going to pull your arm or leg to get you to eat healthier or work out. Just stay positive, create a clear goal, follow your heart, and stay dedicated and persistent and you will achieve your goals. Remember that it doesn't happen over night, it's a process, sometimes a long one, but I promise you, the pain and the hard work WILL pay off!"
Thomas’s Greatest Source of Motivation
My biggest fitness-related motivation is myself. At the end of the day, no matter what anybody tells me, it all comes down to what I decide to do. Fitness is 80% mental and 20% physical. The hard part is getting yourself off the couch in the first place. Once you're at the gym you've conquered the mental aspect and then the physical part kicks in!
Thomas’s Favorite Exercise
"My favorite exercise would be deadlifts. I don't think there is any better feeling than feeling a metal bar bend in your hands, and being able to lift some really heavy weight. My favorite exercise routine is the upper body, lower body split I have been working on with Kris. We do a heavy upper body day followed by a heavy lower body day, followed by a higher rep, less weight upper body day, and a higher rep, less weight lower body day. I have seen a lot of growth in my stubborn areas, like my chest and legs and am really enjoying this workout split we came up with!"

I am no different than any of you. We all have different starting points on our fitness journeys. Some people are overweight, some people like me, were underweight, some people have health problems, etc. No matter what our starting points, we all share a common end goal! We all want to be healthy, we all want to look good, feel good and love our bodies. I am just like you. I started out, not knowing where to begin, not knowing what to expect, but you must be willing to change and adapt to figure out what works for yourself in order to make the most of your fitness journey. I was not GIVEN the body I currently have, nobody sees the struggles we have to face while making fitness a lifestyle. Hard work, dedication, persistence, and consistency are the keys to your success. So just remember that the people that you admire, the people that inspire you and get you excited to work out, they are no different than you. The only difference between them and you is time and hard work. Put in the time and put in the effort and there is nothing that you can't achieve!"
