What does independence mean to you?

The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself. On Independence Day, we asked the PumpUp community "What does independence mean to you?".  Here are some of their beautiful answers. Independence is having the ability to think for yourself and do things for yourself with freedom, without fear of retribution. It's the freedom to chase one's dreams. It's the freedom to be who you want to be and not be judged, while respecting the rights and beliefs of others. - @excoach

To me, independence means fully accepting and loving myself for who I am and having the freedom to make the right choices in terms of health and nutrition because of that. It means not having to give a [sh**] about what other people want me to do or think that it's bad for me. Rather, it's me making my own decisions. And I'm truly grateful for that. There are too many unhappy people trying to put others down. Independence starts when we choose not to accept that. - @ms_al

Independence is enjoying life to the fullest. To overcome any obstacle that comes your way. To be independent with the strength and willpower that you have as a person. To love and care for yourself. To not be judged by the color of your skin, by the way you look, or by your sexuality. Independence is being able to make choices for yourself and better understand what you need in life. Independence means to love one another, even in a world of violence. Independence is coming together as one, bringing people up and not down. - @fitness_ethomas

Independence is relying on yourself and not on others. You look for family and friends to stand beside you for support, but do not need them to hold you up. Independence is knowledge, freedom, empowerment, and ambition that is embraced and not bestowed upon you. Real independence is earned, not given. - @elena_elise

Independence is the freedom to choose your own path, whether it be right or wrong. You do not depend on others to make decisions for you. It allows you to break free of the norm. It's your path, your choice, your independence. - @aanthony18

Independence means to be free to be how you were created to be. Freedom to live life to the fullest, love passionately and deeply, and reach out to those who are forgotten. Independence means having the opportunity to change the world, one day and one action at a time. - @triplettmom

Independence means that you can stand on your own two feet. you may be supported by others, but you do not rely on them. If they let you go, you are still strong enough to make your own decisions, to do things by yourself. - @louisetheunis
