Spotlight Series: Zack

At PumpUp, we’re very proud to see our members make giant leaps forward with their personal health and fitness by working out with the PumpUp app.
We recently spoke with Zack S. from Waterloo, Ontario about his experience working out with PumpUp. Here’s what he had to say:

I have been using PumpUp for just under 6 months. It is a great tool for planning and showing me exactly what to do in the gym and giving me tips if I’m not sure how to properly execute certain exercises.

Prior to using PumpUp, I hadn’t really been going to the gym. I was doing a lot of walking, back and forth on campus, but I knew that wasn’t enough. Even if I did go to the gym, I would tend to do the same exercises each time, or I would just give up after around half an hour. As a student, my life is always on the go, be it with school work, meeting with professors, my job off campus, etc…

In years prior, I had gained massive amounts of weight during the school year. I thought I was eating healthy throughout the day, but that clearly wasn’t the case. Forget the freshman 15, I entered my 1st year of university weighing 195 pounds.I left university that school year having gained 40 pounds and now weighing 235 pounds. I didn’t like the way I looked at all. I did lose some of the weight in the summer, but could not lose it all. By the time I had finished my third year of university, I was back at this weight of 235 pounds. I decided I was finally going to do something about it.

I had thought about a personal trainer, but I didn’t want to spend the money, nor did I think it would be motivating enough for me. I tried working out at home with the equipment I have, but just like in previous trips to the gym, I would give up. Finally, my friend Phil told me about the PumpUp App. It really is like having a personal trainer in your pocket. I can set my workouts to my desired level. I can work out for as long or as little as I want, depending on my schedule. It really just caters to my needs as a user. The app has a large database of exercises ranging from core, to arms, to legs and keeps updating itself based on your progress. Never again will I continuously do 2 sets of bicep curls and think that I’m finished. The app keeps challenging me to lift more weight in an exercise or get that one or two extra reps in.

I started using PumpUp in May of this year, at the time, I mentioned I weighed 235 pounds. I am very proud to say that I currently weight 197 pounds and I owe a great deal of thanks to this app. I have so much more energy, as well as confidence in myself. I feel the best I have in a good long time. I am more focused now on maintaining a healthy lifestyle than I have ever been in so many years.

So, thank you PumpUp! Fitness really just got personal.

As Zack has experienced, PumpUp is a great, free way to keep you motivated with high quality, personalized routines for the gym, at home, or on-the-go. PumpUp helps you see real results. We’re proud to have helped Zack make a positive change in his life, towards a healthier and more active lifestyle!

Do you have a story on how PumpUp has helped you? We’d love to hear it.

Spotlight Series: Warren

At PumpUp, we’re proud to help our members overcome adversity, reach their personal fitness goals, and live a more healthy lifestyle!

Recently, we spoke with Warren C. from Calgary, Alberta about his experience working out with PumpUp. Here’s what he had to say:

I have been using the PumpUp app for about 4 months now. I find it’s an excellent way to keep me motivated, structure my workouts, and it’s allowed me to become a more healthy individual.

I’ve been going to the gym regularly for a number of years. However, as I got older and moved on to the “real world,” my daily routine changed considerably due to my career. As an accountant, sitting at a desk for over 8 hours a day became the norm, and I was getting very little exercise in my job life. Towards my later 20’s and early 30’s I had put on over 35 lbs due to a more sedentary lifestyle.

In December of 2012 I received a wake-up call. I had lost 25 lbs without really changing my lifestyle, all in only 3 months. I asked myself the question “how can I being losing so much weight without eating differently or exercising more than usual?” I went to the doctor and sure enough there was something wrong with me… diabetes. The first thing the doctor recommended was a strict exercise routine, and wholesale change in my diet. I first thought of getting a personal trainer, but they can be very expensive, so I thought perhaps there was an app for my phone that I could use.  That was when I came across the PumpUp app. I loaded it onto my phone, and have been using it ever since.

I love this app because it almost forces you to complete an entire workout.  My biggest problem in the past was that I would have “that’s good enough” syndrome.  I would do 2 sets of an exercise, and then skip the others because “that was good enough”. The workouts created by PumpUp establishes a structure that allows you to hit all your goals for that workout and keeps you motivated to finish. There are tons of different exercises available that are totally interchangeable, that will keep your workouts fresh and engaging… avoiding the dreaded “plateau”.

Another feature I love is that it also has workouts designed for those days where you can’t make it to the gym and you can only work out using your own body weight. Like most of us, I don’t have 2 hours to work out per day, so it’s important to maximize the workout in the time you have available, and this program allows you to do that.

Today I am focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle in order to keep my diabetes in check. Since using PumpUp, my cardio endurance has increased, I have gained about 10 lbs back in muscle, have kept my blood sugar under control and ironically enough, am feeling better than I have in years.

Pump Up is like having a personal trainer in your pocket everywhere you go and I am a big fan!

As Warren experienced, PumpUp helps push you forward so you see results and avoid plateauing. We make it easy to create a great, personalized routine for home, the gym, or on-the-go. So, if you can’t find the time to make it to the gym, or you have no equipment available, we have you covered! We’re proud to hear that PumpUp has helped Warren improve his cardio, gain muscle, and get back to feeling on top of the world!

Spotlight Series: Miss Alaska Pumps Up!

At PumpUp we’re proud to have so many incredible members. Recently we found out that Jessica F., also known as Miss Alaska, is using PumpUp to train for the Miss United States Pageant!

We reached out to Miss Alaska and asked her what she loves about PumpUp:

“PumpUp has helped me make great strides towards my fitness goal of how I want to look on stage at Miss United States in July. I love the versatility that the app provides, it accommodates my schedule since I can cater my workout time and depending on if I am home or at the gym. PumpUp has been a great addition to my routine!”

Miss Alaska was kind enough to take a few minutes out of her busy schedule to sit down with the PumpUp team and answer a few questions:

Q: So, what got you into participating in pageants?

A: I got into pageants to help fund my college education. It started with Miss America, until I became too old to participate. I won a local title, then went to state where I was 1st runner up. As a result, I received the title of Miss Alaska sweetheart. This gave me 2 full years paid for with school!

Q: How does it feel to be Miss Alaska? That’s a big deal!

A: It feels awesome! Though it’s definitely a huge weight on one’s shoulders; you need to be careful where you go in town and who you associate with to maintain a good image as Miss Alaska. It’s a very honorable position and you only have for the title for 1 year, so it’s important to make the most of it! Being an Alaska native, it’s huge for the culture, community, and the state itself!

Q: How do you use PumpUp to train for Miss United States?

A: I’ve been using PumpUp at home and at night on top of my time at the gym doing a special Miss Alaska routine. I especially love it for core and conditioning circuits at home, I love how it uses the equipment I have available at home. I even pick and choose exercises I discover from PumpUp that I use for my personal training clients!

Q: What is your favorite thing about PumpUp?

A: I love the diversity of exercises. Even if you’re just trying to do a core circuit  you’re always learning something new! Even as a trainer, I’ve learnt a ton of new exercises from using PumpUp which is awesome!

Q: What’s your favorite part of the journey toward the big Miss United States pageant?

A: Other than just being able to be a mentor for the community, it’s really being the best representation of the state of Alaska. Being a titleholder is not just about being a role model. It’s about setting a standard of what young people are expected to do, being an active member of the community, and doing something that is meaningful every single day!

Q: What is the toughest part of your journey toward the pageant?

A: Staying in shape with all the great food at all the fundraisers! Also making time to be everywhere at once! I always have many appearances to attend, and its a challenge to manage my schedule.

Q: You live a busy but very healthy lifestyle. Awesome work! Do you have healthy living tips for PumpUp members?

A: Definitely. My biggest tip – don’t treat exercise as a diet. Once you meet your goal, don’t just end there. It really needs to be a lifestyle. You need to incorporate it into everything you do. Everyone is busy, family, kids, but it’s so important to make some time for yourself, take care of your own well being. Stay active. You just gotta stick to it!

We had a blast talking with Miss Alaska! We’re excited Jessica is loving PumpUp and using our app to train for the Miss United States pageant. Best of luck, Jessica! Make us proud!

Spotlight Series: Swizec

At PumpUp, we’re proud to have members working out with our app on almost every continent across the globe!

Recently, we spoke with Swizec T. from Ljubljana, Slovenia about his experience working out with the PumpUp app. Here’s what he had to say:

I’ve been working out every morning for a few years now. It started as a quick way to wake up and evolved from there — pushups, situps, jump rope — the sort of things you can do at home without any equipment.

It was going great at first and I was seeing a lot of progress until I became complacent and was just doing the same thing every morning out of habit: not pushing myself, not progressing. It started getting really boring as well — imagine doing the exact same routine every morning for about a year. Same sequence of exercises, same number of repetitions. Meh!

PumpUp solved that magnificently.

The routine it created is just the right sort of grueling and it just keeps pushing and pushing. There is not a single day when I am not completely wasted by the end of a PumpUp routine. It’s awesome!

As Swizec has experienced, one of PumpUp’s greatest features is that it just keeps pushing you. As you work out, the app actually learns about you and intelligently changes your workout so you keep improving! We’re proud to hear that PumpUp is pushing Swizec to the next level and giving him great results!

Do you have a story on how PumpUp has helped you? We’d love to hear it.

Ps. Don’t forget to download PumpUp to start living a more active and healthy life!

Spotlight Series: Ronan

At PumpUp, we’re proud to have some of the most passionate and dedicated users who care about their health and well being.

Recently, we spoke with Ronan L. from Toronto about his experience working out with the PumpUp app. Here’s what he had to say:

I have been using the Pump Up app for about three months now, can’t speak highly enough about it.
For many years, I was an avid gym-goer. I would workout three to four times per week. As a relatively slim person, my ambition at the gym was to add weight and muscle and over the course of about 4 years, I had added about 15lbs in muscle. (Quite the achievement for me!) However, last year due to some personal circumstances, my attendance at the gym dropped off substantially and I ended up not working out for about 6 consecutive months. Over that period much of the muscle mass that I had worked hard to put on faded.
In December, my life circumstances changed again and I resumed my gym attendance. I had heard about Pump Up from a technology blog so decided to give it a shot. The first thing I noticed about it was how it forced me out of my normal routine. Even when I was going to the gym regularly, my workouts had become somewhat static; however, PumpUp introduced me to a number of new exercises that I hadn’t considered before and encouraged me to engage in types of training that I did not do regularly (i.e. cardio/core). This made my workouts much more engaging and interesting and got me working muscles that hadn’t been used in my workouts, if ever!
I also find the workout summaries at the end of each workout to be effective at encouraging me to complete an entire workout (and not cheat). Even though the cues are subtle, the indications that I did not complete an exercise fully are encouraging enough to make sure that next time I do not cheat, or cut out early on a workout.
Even though I have only been going back to the gym for about 4 months now, I have already put back on most of the muscle mass that I lost and I attribute that success primarily to PumpUp. The workouts are engaging, the instructional elements intuitive, and the tracking and feedback loops motivating which all keep me coming back to the gym, using the app and constantly pushing myself to put more into - and get more out of - my workouts.
It’s stories like Ronan’s that remind us why we’re building PumpUp. Each and every day we aim to improve the fitness, health, and lives of people across the world! We’re proud to hear that PumpUp has helped Ronan in his fitness journey!
Do you have a story on how PumpUp has helped you? We’d love to hear it.
