U.S. Hammer Thrower Amanda Bingson talks strength, femininity, and why you can kick ass and still look great doing it

U.S. Hammer Thrower Amanda Bingson talks strength, femininity, and why you can kick ass and still look great doing it

"I'll be honest, I like everything about my body"— that's not an admission you hear every day. But why shouldn't it be? USA track & field hammer thrower Amanda Bingson embodies the message that being healthy, strong, and feminine isn't a 'look' -  it's a way of being. The Las Vegas native broke the female American record for hammer throwing in 2013, made the U.S. Olympic team, and garnered a great deal of attention after posing nude on the cover of ESPN the Magazine's Body Issue. Rather than worrying about how her body looks, Amanda focuses on what her body can do. PumpUp talked to Amanda about her views on strength, femininity, and how a positive support system got her to where she is today.

5 DIY beauty hacks straight from your kitchen

Sunny weather and salty water bring tons of fun, but they can also damage your hair and skin. Even though healthy skin comes with having a healthy mind and body, you should still take extra care of it. Not only are these 5 DIY beauty hacks great for your skin and hair, but they're also made with 100% natural and easy to find ingredients.

  1. Coffee Grounds Face & Body Scrub: Coffee is used to wake us up when we're tired. When it comes to beauty, coffee works the same way. Why not use it in your routine? Coffee contains antioxidants and it also helps to get your blood circulation flowing. This is the reason why many anti-cellulite products have caffeine in it. Enough with the chit-chat. Here's what you need:
  • fresh coffee grounds (organic, if possible)
  • a bit of coconut oil

Mix both ingredients together and scrub all over your body in the shower, and on your face with round, circular motions. Be cautious and try to exfoliate your skin for once a week at max.

  1. Oats & Avocado Face Mask: From your breakfast to your bathroom, oats have many uses. This ingredient can soften your skin due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The healthy fats from the avocado in this recipe will keep your skin moisturized and smooth.
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 2 tablespoons of oats

Put the avocado and the oats into a blender and pulse till you get a creamy consistency. Apply mixture evenly onto your face and neck and leave it there for about 15 minutes. Refrigerate avocados in the fridge before you make the face mask for best results.

  1. Infused water for sunburns: Summer is all about lazy days at the pool, long walks on the beach, and sun-kissed skin. But when we focus too much on getting the “sunkissed” look, we get sunburns. If your skin is sensitive, the last thing you want to do is put chemicals on it! These ingredients below will help your skin to heal and hydrate in a natural way, without putting to many products on the affected area.
  • 1/2 Cool/frozen cucumber (you can also use cantaloupes)
  • ½ Liter of coconut water (you can also use regular water)
  • Mint leaves

Just put everything in a bottle with a spraying device, leave it in the fridge for a few hours, and then use it all over your body.

  1. Coconut oil as hair mask: Coconut oil has many many uses when it comes to beauty, but my favorite one is moisturizing the hair! A lot of people use about 1 tbsp of coconut oil as a day-to-day face mask, but I prefer to put it into my dry hair. First, I massage it (remember, the oil must be melted) on my scalp and comb it through to the ends of my hair, then I leave it there for about two hours. After, I wash my hair with water until the oil is rinsed out completely. It works even better if you put it on before bed and wash it out next morning. I only do this once a month, and it works fine for me!

  1. Green tea skin toner: Green tea is a must when it comes to beauty products. Just look at all the things you can buy with green tea in it! This ingredient helps oily skin, reduces the appearance of your pores, has anti-aging effects, and even has a bit of sun protection. You can use matcha powder to maximize results. Make a strong brew, put into an airtight container and apply it on your skin with cotton when you wake up and before bed.

4 surprising reasons why beauty and confidence are linked

4 surprising reasons why beauty and confidence are linked

Screen-Shot-2015-05-25-at-3.23.27-PM-e1432663131669.png

People say that inner beauty is reflected in how people look on the outside. But the opposite also rings true. When you’re looking your best, you end up feeling good. Beauty and confidence are linked in less obvious ways that you'd think. Physical beauty jump-starts your confidence

If you’ve ever experienced ashy or acne-prone skin, you’ll know how it can zap your confidence. Likewise, when your skin is clear, you feel better. You exhibit a range of behaviours that indicate this: you'll hold your head up high and make eye-contact with people, rather than attempting to hide your face.   When you identify the aspects of your appearance that dissolve your confidence, you might be able to give your self-esteem a necessary boost. If you have an ashy complexion that causes your skin to look dull, skin lightening creams that make your skin more luminous may help. In turn, this may relieve any built-up tension you feel towards yourself.

A study found that when men wore a scented product, women found them more attractive - even though they could not smell them! The reason? The men carried themselves with confidence, which had the effect of increasing their physical appeal to people they interacted with. Even psychologists backed this up, saying that grooming rituals can help to boost your confidence levels in the short term.

Spiritual beauty helps you think more positively

Although spiritual beauty is mostly an inside job - you should nurture your soul with goodness, find goodness in the world and spread kindness - some of it is definitely linked to how you react to your appearance. Sometimes people look at themselves in the mirror and only see negative things. Self-criticism can make you feel judged by yourself, which will launch you into bad mood territory. How are you supposed to be kind to others when you can’t be kind to yourself Start looking for things you love about your appearance when you glance at your reflection - your shiny eyes, your glowing skin, your beautiful smile - because it will stimulate the reward system in your brain. Remember that you can’t send out love if you don’t have some of it set aside in your soul for yourself!

Spiritual beauty can also enhance your physical beauty

When you cultivate your spiritual beauty, this can enhance your physical beauty. Your appearance radiates what is going on within your soul. Having inner serenity will reflect in how you look. You will appear composed, calm, and you'll walk tall. If you're stressed, the consequences can reveal themselves in various ways. A few examples? Wrinkles from frowning, bitten-down nails, and skin issues.

Looking after your body makes you look and feel good, period.

The interesting thing about inner and outer beauty is that they're linked. If you care about your body by leading a healthy lifestyle, this will make you healthier and feel good (especially if you're part of a fitness community). It’s a positive chain reaction. Focus on healthy lifestyle habits that encourage physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and your soul will shine.

Beauty and confidence are strongly linked, sometimes more than we realize. Focusing on strengthening physical and spiritual beauty will enable you to take beautiful flight in the amazing person you are.

6 tips to eat your way to clear skin

6 tips to eat your way to clear skin

DeathtoStock_NotStock3.jpg

Want to eat your way to a fabulous complexion? Check out these six dietary tips that will have your skin looking and feeling as radiant as you are already.

1. Eat dark berries

Berries are brimming with skin clearing antioxidants. Blackberries, in particular, are fantastic for your skin. This vibrant fruit is rich in vitamins A and C and has been known to help fight free radicals. Furthermore, Vitamin C helps to encourage cell turnover and collagen production, helping skin maintain firmness and luminosity.

When applied topically, blackberry and fruit extracts in cleansers helps to remove dead skin cells and curb excess oil production. To incorporate blackberries into your diet, make yourself a berry, kale, and yogurt smoothie, eat them as a snack, or throw them into a spinach salad.

2. Get your tomato on

Eat your way to clearer skin: use tomatoes (gif)

(Image c/o giphy)

Tomatoes, especially the cooked variety, definitely need to be on your menu this Spring and Summer. Why? Lycopene, the chemical compound found in tomatoes that give them their color, also helps to neutralize and even repair sun damage/ exposure. Although lycopene is present in raw tomatoes, the fruit releases more of the skin-saving compound when cooked.

Thinking about indulging in a slice of pizza? That isn’t such a bad idea. The tomato paste is actually good for you. Now you can snack on pasta guilt free? And if you’re on a low-carb diet, never fear. Simply eat a few spoonfuls of tomato paste after prolonged sun exposure. (But remember to wear sunscreen.)

3. Protein is your friend

Getting enough protein is essential for ensuring the health of your hair, skin, and nails. Science Daily even suggests that the vitamins and minerals in protein could provide anti-aging benefits. So, if you’re a meat eater, feel free to load up on lean protein like chicken and fish. If you’re a vegetarian, opt for eggs and other high-protein foods.

4. Healthy Fats Give You That Glow

Surely you’ve heard this before, but it’s worth repeating: healthy fats are great for the health of your hair and skin. Take nuts, for instance, which are packed with Omega-6 fatty acids. Feel free to snack on walnuts, almonds, and even avocados. Your skin will thank you.

5. Hydrate

Stay hydrated, and skin will retain its moisture and flush out unwanted toxins that can irritate your body and your skin. Not a big fan of water? Try these tips.

  • When you’re out at a restaurant, opt for water whenever possible.
  • Drink one glass when you wake up in the morning. Make it hot water with lemon for extra detox benefits.
  • Infuse your water with fruit or cucumbers.
  • Buy a charcoal filter and keep it filled in your fridge.

6. Strong antioxidant tea

There are so many fantastic antioxidant teas. Camomile helps to is a calming agent, great for soothing skin irritation. Mint has antibacterial properties. It can be used topically (diluted) as an astringent or in a essential oil form for bathtub relaxation. (Remember, stress can contribute to blemishes and skin flare ups.) Find the tea that’s right for you and your skin.

5 reasons you should believe the hype about lemon water

5 reasons you should believe the hype about lemon water

lemon-detox-water.jpg

Let me just start off by saying that lemon water is the bomb dot com, I have been drinking it in some way, shape or form for the past 6 months and I couldn’t be happier with the benefits I have received from this small change in my morning routine. I drink a lot of tea, it doesn’t matter if it is -15 or 105 degrees outside, I just can’t get enough. So for me, taking a minute to boil or heat up some water and adding honey with a fresh lemon couldn’t be easier, in fact it’s something I look forward to doing! For me to say I drink it every morning would be false. However I do alternate between lemon, honey or green tea and lemon water frequently and here is why. It’s good for your face

If you just google some of the benefits of lemon water you’ll see that the most popular search result will say that lemons are a great source of vitamin C (more on this in a moment), dig a little further and you will find that lemons balance the Ph levels in the body as well. So what does that mean for you? Well pH stands for potential hydrogen, a pH number measures from 0-14 of how acidic or alkaline a liquid is, high school chemistry ya’ll. We see this a lot in the health and beauty industry, mostly on serums, cleansers, toners and moisturizers. Reason being is  because a balanced pH level means better healthier skin, healthy skin can be generalized as having a 5.5 pH average. Dry skin is high in alkaline or categorized as being too high in pH. So if you have oily skin *silently raises hand, then you (ahem we) have skin that is categorized as being too acidic or low in pH.

Healthy skin can in fact be achieved by eating a proper diet as well as having a proper skin care routine.

It helps with your digestive system and spreads feel goodies from the inside out

Lemons strengthen the liver, if you follow me on twitter pretty much every other tweet is about wine so you know my liver loves me. Lemons have strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting properties. They are often used as a weight loss aid because lemon juice is a digestive cleanser and aids in flushing out unwanted materials from the body. It helps to purify the liver by liquefying bile. It’s great for detoxing, and if you’re looking for more ways to detox your life, check out my YouTube video and listen to the 5 simple ways you can start!

TRY THIS!

DIY Lemon Toner

Mix 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice with a ½ cup of water Apply to your skin with a cotton ball to help balance out your skin and kill that pesky bacteria

Keeps you happy and feeling energized

No need to take a chill pill when you can just have a glass of lemon water instead. Or you can lick one, I mean whatever floats your boat. Lemons are full of Vitamin C. Vitamin C reduces the production of stress hormones and have been proven beneficial to those who have a weakened immune system due to stress.

Great for staying hydrated!

The second your body needs water it tells you in some way or another. Whether you think to yourself, “Hey! I’m thirsty” or not, your body will tell you in other ways in the form of feeling, sluggish, lack of energy or just simply put lack of clarity. Water (with lemons)  supports your immune system  swell as aids in replacing fluids you lost throughout the day.

Keeps you healthy

I could probably go on and on about some of the benefits I have noticed since I started drinking lemon water, but try it for about 2 weeks and I promise you will notice a difference in your skin and just how you feel overall. It’s just cleansing and has a positive effect on your health. I use both fresh cut lemons and lemon juice from the little lemon shaped bottle. When I make poor food choices, let’s be honest don’t we all, and my stomach hurts this also helps to soothe my stomach and almost acts as a detox when I’m trying to get back on track for eating clean.

Lemon water

My favorite Detox water recipe (as shown above) contains: 2 slices of lemon 2 slices of lime 2 slices of cucumber A few fresh mint leaves

Try adding oranges or grapefruit as well to help rid your liver of toxic sludge. Don’t forget about strawberries and raspberries! If making a large serving, I recommend replacing the mint leaves everyday, however the fruit is good for 2-3 days. Keep refrigerated!

detox lemon water

I prefer to drink out of a clear glass container, it motivates me to keep drinking water all day, I also scored this one from target, it is free of BPA which is a chemical found in most plastics, but check out a few of these fun colored glass water bottles from amazon here.

Happy lemon drinking!

6 body positive cards that are as beautiful as you are

If Valentine’s Day is about celebrating the people you love, why shouldn’t Valentine’s Day celebrate you? Be your own cupid and send a relevant, hilarious love letter to yourself from the bottom of your heart. These pumpupapp cards are an amazing way to start.

You deserve all of the cute doodles and positive affirmations in the world. You’re hot stuff, flaws and all (think Sriracha hot, and multiply that by 100). You’re absolutely amazing, at any and every size. Love your imperfections before you love your perfections. Love yourself.

Love yourself: my thoughts on body image

image

This is a guest post by Abigail, of Oh You Pretty Things (a style, health, and beauty blog)

This past week I’ve seen a lot of little quotes that I thought were very inspirational. Here are just a few I liked and my thoughts on them.

image

“A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it.  It just blooms”

Jealousy consumes society.  Instead of just doing our own thing, girls compete with each other over everything.  I completely understand having icons, inspirations, and fashion idols, but one of the most relieving days is the day when you learn to love yourself.   You were born with pale skin? Well, pale is beautiful! You were born with olive skin? Well, tan is gorgeous!  When you stop trying to change yourself to look like someone else, you will realize that there is no one like you.  And how awesome is that?!

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”

I always heard this saying when I was younger, but I never really  knew what it meant.  Even just a year ago I never really understood the actual meaning.   Being in high school and around my friends makes me realize how true this statement is.  For example, I can over hear my guy friends talk about how pretty girls are, yet they all have different opinions and think different girls are pretty in different ways.  Key word, DIFFERENT.  Everyone is different, and one day you will find someone who loves you exactly how you are (because beauty is in the eye of the beholder) Get it? ( and yes I believe everyone has a soul mate!)

“If only our eyes saw souls instead of bodies, how very different our ideals of beauty would be”

Society has changed body image for every girl. The body type portrayed in advertising as the ideal is possessed naturally by only 5% of American females. Meaning that very, very, very few girls are going to look like models (and most are the models) Not that they aren’t gorgeous, because everyone can appreciate their bodies, but it’s good to know that that is not the “average” body type. I think it is very important to take care of your body and to stay fit and healthy, yet you can never look exactly like someone else,  so learn to love yourself!

Don’t try too hard to get a guy’s attention or compete with other girls, but work on changing your mindset, rather than your appearance.  Confidence comes from being happy with yourself, and is often the most attractive aspect of a girl.  Sometimes the guru in me comes out! The weekend is right around the corner, and you can make it. Have a great day!
