Brace your core: planks are coming.  If know that you're going to be planted firmly on the couch so that you can watch Game of Thrones for an extended period of time, do a plank workout in between major plot twists. Perform planks in between chapters of your textbooks. Plank it out after answering 20 emails. PumpUp member @nina_1911 demonstrates four plank variations that will allow you to strengthen your entire body as you dive deep into the world of your favourite television show or immerse yourself in your work. Regardless of how tightly-packed your schedule is, be assured that you have planks to help you stay active. How's that for multi-tasking?

Plank Variation 1: Normal plank

Rest your hands firmly on the ground, with your feet at a shoulder's width apart. Keep your body in a straight line, balancing on the balls of your feet and maintaining an arm position where your shoulders are aligned with your wrists. Try not to crane your neck too far up, and make sure that your hips don't pike up as you plank. Modification: Perform the plank on with your forearms lowered to the ground. Hold for 30-60 seconds.

Plank variation 2 : Side Plank

Keep one hand firmly planted on the ground and rotate the other arm upwards, so that it is perpendicular to your body. ModificationTry the side plank on one elbow, or rest the stacked foot on the ground. Hold for 30-60 seconds.

5 ways to stay sane during hectic situations

5 ways to stay sane during hectic situations

DSCF1245.jpg

Between work and school and family, right now, I’m drowning. I have so much to do in the next month in order to prepare for post-university life. Yet, I keep pushing my work to the side to play on my phone or watch TV or to do anything imaginable that isn’t work. It’s been so bad that last week, my heart was racing for about 5 days due to anxiety and stress. How am I supposed to cope with all that’s going on? In my head, it seems easy to just buckle down, get the work done, and then relax. But in application, it takes a lot more energy. So I’m going to do something a little different for this post. This week I’m going to list my top 5 ways to stay sane in hectic situations.

Plan your work and work your plan

Make a plan and stick to it

I don’t know about you, but I’m a visual person. It helps me get things done if I write things out in the form of calendars, to do lists, and even step-by-step tasks. It may seem like extra work but by writing things down, I’m seeing just how much needs to get done and how it needs to get done.

Take a deep breath

Breathe

During those times when my heart races with stress, I like to take some really deep breaths and clear my mind. If possible, I also try to listen to some nature sounds like the forest or, my favorite, ocean waves on Spotify or YouTube. By focusing my mind on breathing and the nature sounds, I’m able to clear my head for a second and create a blank slate to do more work.

Imagine the satisfaction

Do a happy dance. You deserve it

Visualize how great you'll feel once your work is complete. One thing that also helps me is envisioning myself completing the tasks at hand. Seeing the pure joy on my stress-free face makes me want to work towards that even more.

Ask for help

Don't be afraid to reach out for help

Nothing in this world is accomplished alone and we are not super humans. Ask for help if you are unable to complete a task. It may be hard to let someone down or place a burden on another but, chances are, that person is agreeing to help you because they care about you very much.

Take time to make yourself happy

I cannot stress this last point enough. No matter what you do in hectic times, it’s important to remember your own happiness. Carve out some times for breaks in which you do something you love to do like baking, watching TV or, in my case, singing your heart out to your favorite songs.

I hope you can use some of these tips in your own life to stay sane in the busier times in of your life.

One of my favorite ways to stay energized throughout the day is to always have healthy snacks with me. It is SO important to plan ahead! If you know you are going to be running around all day, whether you are at work or going class to class, you should make sure you have healthy options with you so you don’t reach for that bag of chips or candy bar! The perfect snacks are whole fruits and veggies that will keep you CARBED UP! Here are some of my favorite healthy snacks to munch on throughout the day!

BANANAS are my #1 go-to snack. They are super easy to throw in your bag and eat throughout the day! Make sure your bananas are ripe like these so you get all of the nutritional benefits and so they digest properly!

DATES are like little packs of energy! If you don't have a lot of time on your hands, dates are a great option to get in lots of energy with this nutrient and calorie dense snack!

NO excuses! APPLES have to be the easiest, most accessible fruit to pack for your busy day. I like to eat two or three apples every day!--Not only are they delicious, but they are also a great boost of natural caffeine!

Think AHEAD! Cut up some of your favorite veggies and put them in a bag or container to munch on throughout the day. Veggies will keep you going and give you the energy you need to hold you over until your next meal!

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail

Eating healthy snacks like these will help you kick cravings for unhealthy, processed food. Whole, plant-based snacks a re not only amazing for your mind and body, but they will also keep you energized for your busy days and fuel you for success! Making small changes like this to your every day life will undoubtedly make a huge impact on how you look and feel. Before you go to bed tonight, ask yourself: what am I going to pack for tomorrow?
