How to Make Healthy Decisions (And Stick to Them)

How to Make Healthy Decisions (And Stick to Them)

Every successful outcome will require hard decisions. You make decisions, then set up your schedule to support those goals. For example, if I have to leave for work at 7 am, I set my alarm for 4:30 am so I have time for a 20-30 minute workout, teaching prep, breakfast, a shower, lunch prep, and a quick study to support my inner, spiritual life. I don't focus on how tired I might be, but how I will feel about myself if I succeed.

A journey to self love : How to blossom in all aspects of your life

A journey to self love : How to blossom in all aspects of your life

Quote-3.jpg

Although it can be difficult at first, self-love is something that everyone should invest in. It’s similar to coming out of a dark place and into the light. Though it may hurt your eyes at first, you soon realize that the magnificent view was worth it. My journey to self love started when I decided that I could not move forward without making peace with my past. I tried to jump on the road to happiness several times, but I always stumbled and fell whenever I encountered the tiniest cracks, not knowing why and blaming myself for being weak. I realized then that I owed myself to stop for a moment. I needed to look back just long enough to understand and learn where I came from and where I was heading. I stopped being selfish and started being generous instead: with my time, energy and, most of all, patience. It’s something I have always neglected. That’s how my journey to self-love and self-improvement finally began.

A journey to self love // The PumpUp Blog

It’s a never-ending road. It’s a road that’s meant to make you finally understand the deepest layers of your soul. I have learned so much since I adopted this lifestyle and became a much happier and healthier person. I read somewhere that “being happy is a very personal thing, and it really has nothing to do with anyone else”. These words still resonate in my mind. Every single day, they remind me that I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. I owe it to myself to be genuine.

A journey to self love // The PumpUp Blog

I still get angry, sad or frustrated sometimes, but I have learned to accept these emotions. I no longer run from them or repress them. Feeling that way doesn’t mean that you are failing. It means you are still on this amazing journey and you are not willing to give up even if you stumble a little. Be gentle, be honest to yourself and allow yourself to feel everything.

Acknowledge every emotion and question why are you feeling it. When it’s possible, do something about it. It’s not too late for anything. It’s never late to become who you want to become. If you need to apologize, apologize. If you need to thank someone for a gesture they made months or even years ago, don’t waste any second longer. If you feel like it’s the right thing to do and it will make you feel lighter or happier, do it.

A journey to self love // The PumpUp Blog

But burn bridges if you must. Eliminate the negativity and cut it out of your life without feeling guilty. It can be scary, but it is worth it. You need to protect yourself and immerse yourself in a healthy and positive environment that allows you to grow and blossom, just like a cute little plant. That was a very important step for me. Once I did it, I felt so much better. Sooner than you think, your energy will attract similar positive energies and will slowly distance itself from the negative ones. Surround yourself with good people, listen more and learn. Never stop learning, never stop growing and don’t let anyone ever take away from you the chance to do and be better.

Last but not least, I am here to tell you that no matter how many times you give up or fall and feel like you hit rock bottom, there is a way to get back on your feet and stand back up again. As Beau Taplin said, ”(…) Your body is not a temple. Temples can be destroyed and desecrated. Your body is a forest – thick canopies of maple trees and sweet scented wildflowers sprouting in the underwood. You will grow back, over and over, no matter how badly you are devastated.” Rely on your bones, flesh and blood, but most of all, your mind. Every tiny cell in your body is working so hard to keep you alive and your mind – your mind can do wonders. Love each of them back, as they unconditionally love you. Love yourself and become invincible.

Saturday-10AM-2.png

Take care of how you speak to yourself. You are not a mistake or a problem to be solved. You're capable! Rather than focusing on what you dislike about your body, focus on what you do like. Your capabilities and small achievements will propel you further than you could have ever imagined. We asked the PumpUp community about their best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem during their health and fitness journey and here's what they had to say: Hate versus Love. Take care of how you speak to yourself // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem

Hate: "I am stupid for making this mistake." Love: "I am human, I make mistakes. I'll make an effort to do better next time." Remember, you are worth it.  - PumpUp member @millybedilly

You have an infinite power that can make or break you. Control your emotions and be the champion of your own life // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem

Once you realize that you have the choice to control your emotions, you will be the champion of your own life! Tap into your power because you can do amazing things! - @plantbasedbabe

You are still beating the old you // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem
Your speed doesn’t matter, forward is forward. Don’t beat up yourself trying to be like somebody else! Your progress is yours and nobody can’t take that away from you. There’s no place to go but forward. You’re still beating the old you, the one who always had an excuse; the one who said 'Tomorrow, I’m eating healthy'; the one who said, 'I’ll hit the gym next week, next summer, next year'. You and only you have the power to make your life extraordinary. Don’t wait for somebody to tell you this and make you see your potential. It’s all on you! Don’t give up. - @daphnec
No matter how fast you run, you're still lapping everybody on the couch // PumpUp's best advice for anybody with low self esteem
Even if you go slow, you’re still lapping everyone who’s on the couch. No matter how heavy you lift, how fast or slow you run, how many squats you do, or how often you exercise, it doesn’t matter. you’re trying and making an effort to better yourself, which is a huge step that so many people don’t take -@karak
Every downhill has an uphill // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self esteem
Be patient, just stay positive about life. Life is hard if you think everything is going to be about and rainbows and happiness. You’re thinking wrong. Change your attitude. Remember that every downhill has an uphill. You just need to change directions and put a little more effort so that push through anything you’re going through. - @marianarobledosegura
Take all the negativity from your life and make it your strength. Follow your dreams & make them a reality. Most of all, believe in yourself because if you don't, no one else will.  Surround yourself with positive people who believe in you. Do not strive for perfection but strive for greatness. Write your own story and keep your eyes on your goal. You never know who you are inspiring.

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours

image1.jpg

I have always known that it is so important not only to live my dreams, but to encourage others to fulfill theirs. When I was teaching high school eurythmy, choir and gardening in Hawaii, I always worked in this way with my students, to encourage them to take their dreams and goals seriously. There is an importance to the wisdom of parents, but from a teacher's perspective, I've often seen that many parents seem to be trying to fulfill themselves through their children. If this is the case, I think it is wrong, and puts an unhealthy and untruthful pressure on young people. Of course they want to make their parents happy- but what about themselves? The children have to live with themselves for the rest of their life. I had some students who were so depressed and worried because they felt like they had to go to college to please someone, when what they really wanted to do was work with a master surfboard maker or travel the world. I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours, too. // bodysoulspiritfitness for The PumpUp Blog

To think your dreams are impossible is often a conception brought through society and education. Older people inform the younger that when you get older, you learn that your ideals aren’t realistic. This is exactly the sort of attitude that got those pessimistic people so unenthusiastic about life. It is not easy to stand up for or live your ideals, sure- but anyone willing to take on challenges in their life WILL succeed. I’m pretty sure life isn’t meant to be easy. We learn the most and gain the most valuable aspects of ourselves when it is not.

The experience one has when you have reached a goal, unfolded a dream, or upheld an ideal close to your heart, is one of the highest feelings of the soul. To have created an intention once, and through life’s work and adventures finally found your way to its fruition, is a glorious and happy moment. It can be simple: one of my dreams since I was a teenager was to design and sew my own wedding dress if I ever got married. My wedding is in a month and I just finished the dress of my dreams. I wasn’t sure if I could even do it, for one wants everything to be perfect for that special moment; but it happened and passed my quality test with flying colors. I cannot wait to stand in it before my future husband, friends, and family, and be humbly proud that I can wear a beautiful garment I created out of 15 yards of silk and 5 yards of cotton lace.

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours, too. // bodysoulspiritfitness for The PumpUp Blog

Each of us has so many goals and dreams, of all different sizes, and you just have to figure out when to tackle each one. As you fulfill them, it will give you strength and encouragement, as well as the knowledge that all things are possible when you don’t give up. It’s rarely easy, but it is always worth it. Happiness is the best sustenance for health.

How Monica revived her depleted motivation

How Monica revived her depleted motivation

Many people adopt healthier habits with a plan of action and an indomitable drive to succeed. But what if your motivation dissipates over time? This happened to Monica, a PumpUp member who hit a plateau after losing 15 lbs. "I began my journey [back] in 2012, but it was a slow process," she said. "The only problem was that I didn't know anything about nutrition. I ate what I thought was healthy, and of course I was wrong sometimes."

Transform a devastating injury into an amazing victory with these 5 tips

Transform a devastating injury into an amazing victory with these 5 tips

When life throws us a curveball, bouncing back is a lot easier said than done. Especially after experiencing a devastating injury, getting back on track may seem like an uphill task. However, as esteemed author Henry Cloud puts it, take everything one grain at a time. A severe injury is certainly something people don’t expect, but when the unfortunate happens, you'll be able to transform a devastating injury into an amazing victory by taking small steps to assist you in your journey to recovery.

Transform a devastating injury into a victory with these simple steps // PumpUp Blog

1. Make a decision

Devastating injuries that rob you of your ability to function can be very distressing. You'll be naturally inclined to feel sad. The thought of getting better may seem too arduous a task to accomplish.

Emerging victorious from any injury first requires a decision from you. Once you decide that you would like to change an upsetting situation into one that you triumph over, it alters the way you see things. What may be a terrible situation to others now becomes an opportunity for you to showcase your inner strength.

As with many instances in life, it’s always an issue of mind over matter. While this ‘matter’ is a serious one, the moment you decide to turn things around in your favour will set you on a course of positivity and success.

2. Surround yourself with positivity

The truth is, while most injuries may be physical, the state of your emotions and mental health will greatly affect your recovery. As you focus on getting better, it is vital that you remain positive. Research has shown that surrounding yourself with positivity immensely helps with the recovery process. Positive people, pieces of writing, music, or even items can evoke optimistic thoughts.

Look around. What are some things that encourage you?

3. Go back to nature

During the recovery process, the stress of progress and external pressure may feel like a deeply entrenched anchor that’s holding you back.

However, nature has a way of working things out. Be it the sense of freedom you feel when grass tickles your feet, or the serenity that washes over you as you listen to gentle waves, elements of nature seem to take us to a place of peace.

Some hospitals have moved into creating garden spaces where patients can find tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of life. Research has also proven that even photos of nature aid in lowering anxiety, thus assisting in recovery.

Whether it’s  a potted plant or a mini aquarium, anything with a touch of nature can give your recovery a slight steer towards victory.

4. Practice mindfulness

Going back to the root of it all, the state of your mind determines the outcome of your situation. In this fast-paced world, it’s so easy to get caught up in a whirlwind of responsibilities and expectations. As a result, you may find yourself increasingly dissatisfied with things – your injury, the negligible speed of your recovery and lost opportunities.

However, when the unfortunate happens, the age old (albeit cliché) saying of “When life throws you lemons, make lemonade” speaks insurmountable truth. Positivity and mindfulness – or being in control of your thoughts– requires practice.

Introspection may be the pivotal act that changes your gloomy outlook into one that shines hope. Be it through reading, writing, music, or meditation, consider what helps you calm your mind.

5. Be an inspiration

One way to turn a bad situation into a positive one is to help others.  It naturally puts you on a path of thinking that guides you towards successful recovery in both the mind and the body. Helping others to see that they can emerge victorious can, in turn, help you as well.

At the end of the day, your biggest hurdle is yourself. The strength of one’s thoughts is frequently overlooked and underestimated. However, once you acknowledge that you can do just about anything, no matter how tough it is, a natural push sets in.

Be the inspiration, because you are an inspiration!

How Molly gave up junk food and gained the confidence to stay healthy for life

With the help of PumpUp, Molly gave up junk food for good. When Molly began her journey with PumpUp one year ago, she weighed 157 lbs. Her current weight stands at a much lower 131 lbs. "At my height (5'7"), 157 lbs was at the high end of what I should weigh," she said. "Since I started using PumpUp, I now eat right. I cook dinner, I make sure I have healthy snack choices, I eat a lot throughout my day, and drink at least 8 bottles of water. I love the way I feel now."
