Over the last few months, Laura adopted a lifestyle that fulfills her nutritive needs. "[My diet] is one that I actually like to follow," she elaborated. "I have achieved my dream weight! I've never been overweight, but I was pretty much kissing that BMI limit line. I know that weight is just a number [...] but I'm now at a healthy weight. It's the perfect head start towards shaping my body the way I want it to be."
Veganism is an effective approach to eating healthy, but it doesn't necessarily guarantee it. PumpUp member @daphnec began to realize this as her busy schedule took its toll on her sporadic eating patterns. "Before PumpUp, my eating schedule was healthy but inconsistent," she elaborated. "I have been a vegan for almost 5 years, but I used to skip meals and snacked frequently while I was on the go. My workouts were definitely very inconsistent. Though I practiced yoga and Zumba a couple of times a week, I wasn't very persistent about it!"
In the 6 short months that Daphne's been a member of the PumpUp community, she was able to find the motivation she needed. "I was blown away by the support and kindness of the people on PumpUp," she enthused. "I found a great way to keep track of my workout routines and I loved learning more about other members' fitness journeys. Using PumpUp has definitely helped me to push myself. It's great to be around a group of people who all share a passion for leading happy and healthy lifestyles." Since joining the PumpUp community, Daphne has been able to up the frequency and intensity of her workouts. "PumpUp helped me to stay on track so much," she insisted. "From posting pictures to keeping track of your workouts, this app is amazing. I'm also a little obsessed with PumpUp Pat. Every time he pops on my screen to remind me that I'm almost on track, I get so anxious. I feel like PumpUp is constantly pushing myself to be best that I can be."
If something is important to you, you'll find a way. If not, you'll find an excuse. Daphne lost all of her excuses once PumpUp's fitness community began to support her along her journey. "I was full of excuses. I was constantly abiding by unhealthy and irregular eating patterns and found reason to skip my workouts," she recounted. "Finding a 'before' picture of me was challenging. I wasn't comfortable with my body or my own skin, so I was a person who would hide away from pictures. Once I broke with my bad habits, I realized that I could be my own motivator." Daphne insists on the importance of hard work, commitment, and discipline. "You're your own cheerleader and motivator," she counselled. "If you're willing to go from the ordinary to the extraordinary, it's up to you to make a change. Be consistent, eat healthy, and drink lots of water. If you're putting in work, you'll see results!"
There isn't an automatic key that unlocked the secret to Daphne's success. Once she embraced PumpUp's fitness community and found an exercise that she was passionate about, Daphne committed to her health and wellness journey wholeheartedly. "I've tried tons of different exercise trends, but none of them really interested me," she professed. "Kickboxing definitely changed that. Not only is it an amazing full-body workout, it constantly changes and engages me every day. It definitely wasn't the easiest workout to begin with, but my endurance is definitely improving and my form keeps getting better!"
It's definitely my mom. She demonstrated the importance of hard work to me at a very young age. She's always supported my dreams and aspirations, and she's also been my biggest motivator when it comes to working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle! When I told her that I wanted to become a vegan, she was my first supporter. She even joined me in my journey! She's sacrificed so much to provide the best for our family. I can't thank her enough for always being there in my life.
I'm literally obsessed with mango chia seed pudding. It's delicious, it's amazing and it makes a great breakfast! For lunch, I'm pretty much happy with any good, hearty salad. Raw walnut meat wrapped in collard greens tastes like heaven (I never share these wraps with anybody). I love to drink smoothies every day, in between meals (especially green smoothies for breakfast). I don't take any kinds of supplements. When I do incorporate protein into my diet, I blend açai berries (unsweetened and found in the freezer section of health supermarkets) almond milk, one banana, dates and hemp hearts. It's the best post-workout drink!
"There's no substitute for hard work": it's basically the motto from my gym! You can always dream about reaching your goals. Even so, they won't happen if you're not willing to work towards them! This applies not only to fitness, but to other spheres of your life.

One of the things I'm involved with is the "Lets Move" campaign. It's so inspiring to see an actual campaign that addresses the overall health of young America. In a world so full of technology, children aren't taught how to perform even simple athletic tasks (like how to bounce a ball). It's important to keep sports programs available to children and to encourage them to be healthy and active. It's also important to change some of the major food companies that serve schools and cafeterias. We should get more involved with what's actually been offered. In a society where vegetables are more expensive than junk food, there's definitely something wrong. During this journey I became interested in becoming a certified clinical nutritionist, which might be my next step! I have a busy life and schedule but love it, it helps me keep on going and reaching those goals.
When I was back home (Venezuela) I used to go hiking every summer to Mountain El Avila, this is definitely something I wanted to get myself around to start doing again! Now that the weather it's getting nicer it will be a wonderful time to pick up my hiking skills.

Having a slim frame doesn't make you immune to body shaming. It affects everybody, either directly or indirectly. Though PumpUp member @laurakaleja has been slim for most of her life, one negative weight-related remark made a deep impression upon her relationship with food at a very young age. "Before I started using PumpUp, my diet was crazy and the only thought I had in my head was the need to be super skinny," she recounted. "When I lived with my grandmother in primary school, she let me eat everything I wanted and more. One of my siblings began to call me fat. It really hit me – it hurts when somebody close to you says those kind of remarks about you. From that point onward, I decided that nobody should ever have reason to call me overweight. I started to eat less and less, which of course led to binging later on." This mindset coaxed Laura into developing erratic eating patterns. "I went through so many different diets and experimented with vegetarianism, veganism, you name it. There was a point when I only ate raw food," she recalled. "As I got older, I began to realize that torturing my body with restrictions wasn't the answer."
Almost one year ago, Laura joined the PumpUp community in search of motivation to develop a healthy lifestyle rather than temporary bouts of fitness. "I wanted to get in better shape since one of my favourite YouTubers, Eva Marison, recommended it," she mused. "I immediately fell in love with the PumpUp community. It has always been very supportive and motivating. Most of all, I loved the workouts that PumpUp offered. It opened me up to a whole different range of exercises according to my goals an my fitness level."
A 21 km run became more than an aspiration for Laura
Since joining PumpUp, Laura's eating patterns are also much more balanced. "I have overcome bingeing by eating healthy snacks and having something sweet once in a while if my body really wants it," she offered. "I eat 3 healthy meals a day and 2-3 snacks a day. I hope that PumpUp will help me stay on the right track, because now I'm in a very good place. PumpUp has helped me to appreciate my worth beyond being skinny. With the help of this application I have changed my diet for the better." Laura is dedicated to maintaining this lifestyle. In addition to performing workouts on the app itself, she exercises 3-5 times a week at the gym and enjoys going on 7-20km runs. "I used to think that I couldn’t run more than 10 km, but using PumpUp has helped me realize that I can do even more," she confirmed. "In October 2014, PumpUp allowed me to accomplish something that I thought I couldn't do in a million years. I ran my first half marathon – 21 km."
Best advice for fellow PumpUp members
Be the best version of yourself! You will never look like anybody else, so instead of comparing yourself to others try to focus more on your goals. And remember that everything is possible if you try hard enough.
My go to dishes are brown rice with vegetables and chicken or with red beans, couscous with cooked mushrooms and vegetables, also different kind of salads – mostly with tuna fish. For breakfast my favourite food is oatmeal with fruit and for snacks – some fruit, a rice cake with peanut butter or carrots with hummus. Since I started using PumpUp I got a blender and now one of my favourite type of drinks are smoothies – my all time favourite is bananas with strawberries, blackberries and almond milk.
Biggest source of motivation
My biggest motivation is happiness – and a healthy lifestyle guarantees you that.
Don’t try to be perfect. Just try to be better than you were yesterday.
My most favourite activity is running. It is funny because I hated it a year ago. I used to run only to keep my body in shape, but now I absolutely love it!
Fun fact about Laura
I am a first year University of Latvia student. I study English philology and hope to have a job in the future that would involve a lot of traveling, because that is my favourite thing to do. The most exotic country to which I have been is India.

Like a car without battery juice, Karishma's fitness journey was at a standstill. She sought a way to jump start her progress with a boost of energy and motivation. Over a year ago, she joined the PumpUp community and hasn't looked back since. "After seeing a few posts about it on Instagram, I thought I'd check the app out," she explained. "I loved it straight away! I found it so easy to use and became acquainted with different workouts that I hadn't thought of before. I was already interested in having a healthy and fit lifestyle."
Prior to her journey with PumpUp, Karishma was still maintaining a regular routine at the gym but neglected to see much progress from her frequent visits. "I wasn't the healthiest, and nothing in comparison to how [healthy] I am now," she admitted. "An average day consisted of me waking up early, having a good 60-90 minute workout, coming home, eating, then going to work." Her routine was consistent and cyclical. She was doing a great job maintaining this workout schedule until a new job derailed her plans. "I ended up putting on weight at my new job," she recounted. "Then, I got motivation and worked it all off."
Karishma is sticking to a healthy lifestyle for good thanks to the constant motivation that she receives from the PumpUp community. Since she joined the app, Karishma's much more comfortable wearing certain outfits, exercises more consistently and makes more balanced eating choices than ever before. "I've never had such a healthy lifestyle," she professed. "My routine varies now, because I'm attending university. Being away from home has made me healthier, as my family doesn't adhere to the same lifestyle as I do. I usually go to the gym before or after classes and always go on my days off. Using PumpUp inspires me. I just hope that I can inspire a few other people, as well as learn from others."
Severe shin splints hindered Karishma from running as much as she used to over the course of her journey. "It's just not worth the pain," she said regretfully. "The pain does affect other areas of my lower legs, so I'm going to a physiotherapist soon. This should help deal with whatever problem I may have." Further, like most university students, Karishma admitted to having phases of very irregular sleeping patterns. This is another challenge that she's learned to overcome after committing to a healthy lifestyle. "On some nights, I don't sleep until 5 a.m., or just have one hour's worth of sleep," she lamented. "It's horrible. I've tried everything to help. Nothing but sleeping aids help."
She advises that others looking to achieve a healthy lifestyle should eat well, train hard, and progress will come thereafter. "However small the progress is, it's still something," she counselled. "Everyone struggles sometimes, but it's important to maintain that focus and to slowly reach that goal." She creates smaller benchmarks towards every big goal that she sets for herself. This helps her to feel like she has achieved more, and helps to keep her motivated. "My biggest motivation is seeing other people who have goals that I wish to achieve," she mentioned. "It makes me work that much harder. I definitely see many people on PumpUp whom I admire."
"Breakfast - porridge with strawberries and a cranberry green tea. Lunch - Scrambled eggs with mushrooms. Dinner (currently) - a red onion and goats cheese tart, with roasted sweet potatoes (slightly salted and peppered), a variety of boiled vegetables and grilled asparagus. Snacks - carrots with sweet chilli hummus or a fruit filled smoothie."
"Giving up is always an option, its whether you make it your choice that counts."
"Don't have a favourite workout, never have! Anything that makes me sweat makes me happy."

You know the drill. You're familiar with 'Day 1' scenarios. Time and time again, you commit to maintaining a lifestyle change until life gets in the way and derails you from your goals. Like you, PumpUp member @thenewalexandra revisited her starting point more than once. "I tried to live a healthier lifestyle many times, but always gave up on myself," admitted Alexandra. "I began to use PumpUp almost a year and a half ago because I wanted to be more healthy, with the support of a great community."
Prior to PumpUp, the state of Alexandra's health habits hit an all-time low. "I was less healthy than I've ever been," she conceded. "My friends and I frequented McDonald's more than twice a week. I drank Ice Cappucinos from Tim Hortons every single day. I did absolutely no exercise, which made me feel sluggish and tired all the time." A three-minute run would easily leave her gasping for air. Alexandra's erratic sleeping patterns weren't helping her energy levels either. "I wasn't treating my body the way it deserved to be treated," she lamented.
Paradoxically, a trip to the movies sent Alexandra on the wellness journey of a lifetime after she found out about PumpUp from a preview on Mark Saltzman's Gear Guide. "I instantly fell in love with the whole community of people," she recounts. "The number one thing I love about this app is that there is not an ounce of negativity anywhere. PumpUp is a safe place for all people to document their fitness journey's."
As a student, it was tough for Alexandra to make healthy and convenient eating choices. Since she joined PumpUp, Alexandra taught herself how to make basic healthy meals: everything from quinoa, to soups, to salads. "PumpUp has inspired me to make healthier decisions each and every day," she confirmed. "I always keep cut of fruit and vegetables in my fridge so that I have no reason to snack on anything unhealthy. Beyond that, I rid my cabinets of any junk and replaced it with healthier snacks." Alexandra now exercises at least 4 times a week, regularly attending yoga classes and walking to and from school on a daily basis. Over the summer, she plans to take up Zumba and pole dancing and will continue to incorporate physical activity into her routine. "Whenever I have free time, I get an extra workout in," she explained. "It clears my mind and makes me feel amazing."
When Alexandra really began to engage with PumpUp's different features, she taught herself more than she expected. "PumpUp workouts taught me a lot about fitness [and opened my eyes up to] different workouts," she professed. "My little muscles are starting to show more in my abdominals, arms and legs." Beyond healthier habits, PumpUp has helped Alexandra to considerably improve her self-esteem. "There are days when I'm feeling down about myself, whether it be because of my eating habits, or other reasons , and all I have to do is think about PumpUp community members and I'm instantly much more happy," she mused. "This app really helped me to realize that every single person in this world is absolutely beautiful, and the members of this community aren't just beautiful on the outside, but they have amazing, kind, warm, hearts as well."
Alexandra has fresh and realistic advice for those who hope to make a lifestyle change with the help of PumpUp. "Just do it," she counselled. "There have been days where I sit for hours on the couch just staring at my yoga mat, or thinking of excuses as to why I shouldn't go for a run, but I know that when I just do it I feel much better. Start slowly, and work your way up to a more healthy lifestyle, so when you go to eat healthy or exercise you dread it just a little bit less." She reminds that it isn't realistic to expect immediate results from changes in your lifestyle habits. "I want things to happen right now (I'm not very patient), but [remember that] they happen gradually," she said. "One weekend, my mom and dad both told me that I lost some weight. I hadn't really known if I had or not. That validation is amazing, you just have to wait for it (and do a lot of hard work). Fitness is a life long journey, and we all must accept that in order to be the best we can be."
As Alexandra progresses with her journey, she hopes to be as active as she can be this summer. "With my newfound love for hiking, I plan to travel all over Ontario to view Webster Falls at Dundas, and the cool rock formations in Caledon," she enthused. "I [also] plan on taking every single step to the top of the CN tower by the end of this summer. Without PumpUp I would never have thought to be this active, and when I have my doubts I know I'll be able to turn to the PumpUp community through the next steps in my fitness journey."
My biggest motivation is my mother. My family has had a though time over the last few years, and we wouldn't have been able to survive without her. No matter what the situation is, she manages to put a smile on her face and be the best mother in the world. She constantly puts my brother and my health in front of her own, in order to ensure that were happy. For example, when I didn't have enough money for a prom dress, she took on extra shifts at work in order to help me. When I didn't have enough money to pay my tuition, she did the same once more.
My mom is the most selfless, caring, considerate person that I have ever met. She believes spending her money on herself isn't worth it if she can spend it on her children instead. It's because of everything she has done for me, that I want to succeed for her, whether that be through school, or my own health. After a rough patch, my mom started to take care of herself once again. She began to shop for herself, do her hair, grow her nails, take Pilates, and cut out all the coffee from her diet (and trust me six triple triples a day are not healthy at all!). Seeing her live her own healthy lifestyle is absolutely inspiring.
Fun Fact About Alexandra

When Louise began her journey on PumpUp, became inspired to tackle one of the biggest challenges she’s ever faced: to enter in her very first bikini competition using her own methods and research. Her truly admirable story and the dedication that she devotes to her craft never fails to inspire PumpUp’s million-member community on a very regular basis.
Never one to be sedentary, Louise described herself as an intermittently active person throughout her whole life. One crucial obstacle was holding her back. “I had very little knowledge of nutrition and no goal in mind other than to stay healthy,” she mentioned. In an average day prior to PumpUp, she would eat very little and rarely breakfast—just cereal and the dinners that were available to her at home. Hydration was also the last thing on Louise’s busy mind. “I rarely drank enough…maybe a glass a day,” she admitted. “If I would have continued on that road there would have been major negative health repercussions in my later life.” As a university student, Louise would practice cheerleading and dance once a week. Excessive drinking would, however, negate those workouts.
Since Louise was introduced to PumpUp in February 2014, she leveraged the community as a knowledge hub for health and fitness. “Everyone on PumpUp is very positive—there is a surge of energy that is very motivating,” she insisted. “I like that people ask questions and give support. I began my journey by answering peoples’ questions and adding photos with small facts. I like to spread knowledge.” The more engagement she received from the community, the more her thirst for knowledge about health and fitness intensified. “I found that many have been misled by fad diets from magazines and the media,” she continued. “I wanted to know facts.”
Louise amassed an extensive collection of science-based books and effectively placed herself at the center of her own ‘human trial’, experimenting with exercises, nutrition, and supplementation and using PumpUp to document everything. “Immediately I discovered that the body is a machine and if you fuel it efficiently, you will reap the benefits,” she concluded. “My energy levels were improving, I slept better, and my memory was almost at 90 percent—that’s not like me at all. I loved the feeling and that’s when wellness became a lifestyle choice.”
Over this period of time, Louise gathered a wealth of support from the PumpUp community and embraced the encouragement she received from her followers. Eventually, Louise became inspired to enter in her very first bikini fitness competition. “I came across a few people on PumpUp who competed in body building and fitness shows. I began researching and I knew straight away that it was what I wanted to do,” she recounted. “I picked the competition I wanted to enter and began to search for methods to achieve my goal. Now I’m working backwards from my competition date.” Louise is completing the entire process without a coach, learning as she progresses. “It’s been physically, socially, and mentally challenging but my PumpUp followers have always been there to encourage me when I am feeling unmotivated or alone,” she said earnestly. “It might sound cliché, but they have pumped me up when I felt deflated (pun intended).”
A journey isn’t really a journey without obstacles or speed bumps. Louise is only human. “I have had times when I wanted to eat every sugar-contained item in my house,” she professed. “When I do, I raid the cupboard—and of course I feel guilty. I confessed about it on PumpUp and everyone was very supportive. My journey has not been straightforward; but rather like hiking up a mountain. I know that when I get to the top, I did everything I could to be my best. That will be my reward.” Her dedication to her goal is admirable in every way, and she keeps sane by calculating a healthy balance that works for her—even if it means waking up at the crack of dawn to exercise, or turning down a social event every now and then to make sure that she sticks to her training schedule.
She has succinct and wise words for others who are just beginning their fitness journey or learning to love themselves. “Everyone is different and different things work for different people: there are so many individual factors that can impact a ‘healthy lifestyle’,” she advised. “Big changes take time. Start small and then develop.”
After her competition, Louise hopes to communicate with others more on PumpUp and aspires to assist them on their journey. “I already obtain all of the support and encouragement I need from PumpUp,” she affirmed. “Whether it is prep for a competition or even just to improve their healthy lifestyles, I want to help others by spreading the knowledge that I obtained. One day I may even become a sponsored athlete.”
“Michelle Lewin. She was the first bikini competitor I discovered. Her physique inspired my journey.”
“ I adore banana and peanut butter protein pancakes.
1 scoop of your favourite flavoured protein powder (I use peanut butter Quest powder)
Use a non-stick pan on a low heat. Mix all the ingredients together, don’t mash the banana too much (because it’s nice when you taste a piece in the pancake). Then pan fry like a normal pancake, when the base is solid and moves around the pan it is ready to flip over.”
“Every champion was once a contender that refused to give up”—Rocky Balboa
“I love to train my legs, the strength has developed so quickly. I strength-train four times a week. I love compound exercises, my favorites are Squats and Renegade rows. However, I do like to experiment with new exercises. Every session I try at least one new exercise, usually I feel it the next day. My last session I tried curtsy lunges with a barbell…great for the glutes.”

This PumpUp member defied the odds of her hip injury
If there’s anybody who’s been able to demonstrate a tremendous amount of self-love throughout the course of her lifetime, it would have to be PumpUp member surgicallyrepaired. She’s recovering from major hip surgery & 7 years of hip problems and has been making progress with incorporating running into her routine. “Even a year ago, much less seven years, I would not have been able to believe that I would be able to run again. I was 14 when I was diagnosed with my hip condition, now I’m 22 and defying all expectations. And I’m damn proud.” Keep her pumped!
Alex’s reason for joining PumpUp was simple: she wanted to find enough motivation to transform her lifestyle into a healthy one. As she began her journey, she wanted to learn from other likeminded individuals who were redefining the way they approached health and fitness. “PumpUp has definitely been a great part of the motivation that I needed to find,” she confessed. “The PumpUp family just amazes me. Everybody motivates each other and I still have yet to encounter a single negative comment.” Since August 2014, Alex has amassed thousands of supporters who constantly cheer her on.
Prior to PumpUp, Alex actually incorporated a considerable amount of activity into her routine. She’d workout four to five times a week—although the only type of exercise that she felt like performing was weightlifting. “I thought I could negate whatever I ate,” she shrugged. “I’d eat whatever I wanted: that includes greasy food, sweets, fast food, soda, you name it! I’d binge on fast food and get stuffed after lifting weights because I ‘deserved’ it. I was so wrong. I’d also skip meals—constantly using the excuse that I was ‘too busy’ to eat.”
Her relationship towards food and exercise became much more balanced, nurturing, and forgiving once she joined the PumpUp community. “I started buying healthy food, stopped drinking soda, started drinking way more water, and stopped skipping meals,” she confirmed. Alex eats every 2-3 hours: 3 meals with snacks in between each of them. “Since I started using PumpUp, I’ve lost over 14 pounds and I feel great,” she exclaimed. Alex diversified her exercise preferences thanks to the encouragement of her biggest supporters. “I fell in love with cardio, whether it’s on the treadmill or on the bicycle, I love it!”
For others learning to love themselves and accept themselves for who they are, Alex stresses the importance of finding motivation and courage from within. “You don’t find confidence when others start to ‘like’ you. You find confidence when you’re comfortable even if others don’t,” she mused. “Stop caring about what other people think and be happy with who you are. With any change you want to make, be sure that you are doing it for yourself, and not to please others.”
As Alex continues along her journey with the PumpUp community, she hopes to get in the best shape of her life before she leaves for boot camp with the U.S. Navy. “I just enlisted this past January and I want to be in top form,” she offered. “My brother’s also an incredible source of motivation for me. He’s my gym partner and we push each other to try harder every day.”
“My meals mostly consist on skinless chicken breasts or fish like tilapia and tuna. I add mushrooms, broccoli, mashed potatoes or a simple salad. My usual snacks include yogurt, granola bar, a cup of juice, a fruit or whole wheat crackers with Swiss cheese. My favourite snack is going to sound a little weird—but everyone should try it: it’s a banana with a slice of Swiss cheese wrapped around it. It’s SO good! I also love to prepare really simple banana pancakes: just two eggs for every banana and that’s it! Super easy, healthy, and delicious.”
“My favorite motivational saying is “Throw me to the wolves and I will return leading the pack.”. It basically means, throw me into any situation and I will return victorious.”

#LoveYourself and embrace your past, just as pumpupapp member @yalua did! Tired of having her weight fluctuate, Yanê began her journey with PumpUp to find a consistent source of motivation. She is a beacon of light who inspires thousands of people with her demeanour, her dedication, and her determination.
By learning from her past, she has made leaps and bounds towards a healthier future. A brutal accident galvanized Yanê to truly focus on her wellbeing. “After my accident, my vertebrae shifted and my ribs were blocked—I couldn’t breathe for at least 40 seconds,” she recounted. “I had a lot of therapy with a chiropractor, but working out and building muscle helped me to recover the most. From time to time, the back pain returns but PumpUp helped me to push through the pain and overcome this.” As a victim of violence during her adolescence, Yanê also revealed that she struggled to find motivation due to the mental trauma of her past. “I often felt like I wasn’t good enough—like I would never look the way I wanted,” she lamented. “Once again, PumpUp helped me immensely when people started commenting, ‘We miss you!’ or ‘You are my inspiration!’”
Yane’s weight fluctuated before she began to embrace a healthy lifestyle
Prior to PumpUp, Yanê also had a different perspective towards healthy food and moderation. “I didn’t eat much—I was really thin,” she admitted. “I ate a lot of take-out food as well. PumpUp became my favourite app ever! I now make sure that I always eat as healthy as possible, and a big healthy breakfast became very important to me because it gives me the energy I need to have a great and active day.” Good nutrition and balance are essential components of Yanê ‘s current lifestyle. “It’s more important than exercise—but don’t beat yourself up if you skip a healthy meal or eat something sweet,” she advised. “I don’t ever restrict myself, because I’d end up craving for unhealthy food that much more. I allow myself to eat a little bit of chocolate once in awhile.”
The PumpUp community encouraged Yanê to incorporate a lot more activity into her routine. The frequency of her workouts increased from 1-3 times a week to 4-6 times a week. This particularly helped her cope with academic stress. “Working out was like therapy: I could release all of my stress after sitting around studying all day,” she explained. “Now, I go to salsa 2 times every week—sometimes more—and either work out at the gym or do exercises at home. I do up to 30 minutes of cardio and up to 2 hours of heavy weightlifting at the gym, mostly focusing on my legs, back and abs.”
Motivation from PumpUp helped Yanê to change her mentality about her fitness. “Everything starts in your mind, so if you want to lead a more active lifestyle you should find motivation – like people on the PumpUp community or pants that you want to fit into again,” she counselled. ”Consistency, dedication, and the courage to step out of your comfort zone are very important. Just don’t be too hard on yourself: workouts should be fun!”
Owing to the overwhelming support and encouragement from the PumpUp community, Yanê began her studies to become a fitness instructor. “On PumpUp, positivity is everywhere—it’s what I love the most!” she gushed. “I want to motivate others to be healthy and to help them see that a healthy lifestyle can also be a positive and fun one. This is why PumpUp motivated me to become a personal fitness instructor and to spread positivity—nowadays it’s rare to find.” As Yanê strives for her absolute dream body, she’ll be turning to PumpUp as a constant source of motivation and inspiration.
“Lots of fit women motivate me, especially Michelle Lewin. I absolutely love her and her precious behind. My family members are also a source of motivation for me. My dad is a drug addict—that’s how I know what unhealthy living can lead to. I also want to be a role model for my little cousin, to teach her how to lead a healthy lifestyle. I most of all aspire to make my mother proud! She’s motivated by my new lifestyle (I even got her to do an activity with me and shared about it on PumpUp!) Finally, my followers on PumpUp keep me motivated with all the love and support that they give me. I want to make sure that I stay healthy for them, so that they aren’t disappointed.”
“My favourite snacks are fruits and veggies—especially tropic fruits and carrots with mustard. It doesn’t sound so yummy—but I love it. I absolutely adore eating peanut butter with bananas! I love to drink self-made lemon ginger juice as well! Find the recipe here. My favourite meal is traditional Brazilian chicken with rice and manioc. My favourite breakfast is cooked oats with warm raspberries!”

“I generally love all the exercises PumpUp creates! They are so much fun! My daily routine is: 100 squats, 10 pushups, 50 sit-ups, and self-invented pilates inspired exercises to tone my core and train my balance. I do intensive salsa lessons because I want to make it into the salsa show group!”
More about Yanê
“My name is Yanê Ferreira de Souza. I am half Brazilian and half Swiss. I live in Switzerland. I am studying pop music. My biggest dream is to become a professional pop singer! I am the absolute BIGGEST BEYONCÉ FAN EVER you’ll ever meet! She is also one of my biggest inspiration/motivation.
I grew up in a artistic family, which explains why I also love to draw and play the piano.
My friends call me the crazy Brazilian. I had to go through a lot, but I learned to deal with all of it (the Beyoncé quote I mentioned helps me a LOT). I smile all the time and I am a very lively and happy person.
Probably because I went through so much I want people to be happy, I want people to move on with the negative thoughts and try their best to make themselves happy. And if I can help them with my posts, thoughts, and this blog, I’d be the happiest person in this world!”
Have you ever sought advice from a friendly personal trainer but didn’t know where to start? Meet PumpUp member Lee (@rocsolid_626). He joined PumpUp in July 2014, in search of a niche community tailored to his intense interest in health and fitness. “It was a perfect fit,” he enthused. “Fitness is an obsession for me.”
As a personal trainer, he has been using the app to motivate his clients, create personalized conditioning exercises, and inspire others with recipes and top-notch advice. “I’ve always enjoyed sports and I work out daily because of my occupation as a personal trainer,” he mused. “By using PumpUp, I’ve helped others reach their fitness goals—and not just my clients. Watching others go through complete transformations (just as I did) inspires me like no other. If I can prevent somebody from experiencing health issues later on in the future, then I’m doing great work.” His weight fluctuated a lot throughout his journey. Lee began at 135 lbs, peaked at 206 lbs, and has since maintained a weight of 200 lbs with 9% body fat.
Lee mentioned how hard it was for him to find a continuous source of motivation along his health and fitness journey. PumpUp allowed him to keep tabs of his progress along the way. “I’m inspired by everybody who works hard on PumpUp because a lot of folks won’t even try!” he professed. “On PumpUp, I’m able to post recipes, workouts, fitness tips, and more. I hope that at least one person can benefit from any of my posts.”
His best advice for those looking to lead a more active lifestyle is to be persistent about your goals. “You can workout every day and work out until you can’t move another muscle, but I guarantee that if you don’t eat proper meals, your fitness goals won’t last,” he counselled. Meal prep has been a crucial part of Lee’s success. He frequently struggles to fight the temptation of indulging in fast food. “That’s why meal prep leaves you no excuses. I still battle with being lazy, and forcing myself to work out because I know that if you take just a few days off, those days can turn into weeks upon weeks. All of your hard work will go down the drain. Every post on PumpUp motivates me. Once I see a post, it drives me to get my work done.”
Lee is a strong advocate for having a positive mentality when it comes to health and fitness. “It takes years for procrastinators to get started, but it takes seconds for winners to get started,” he mused. “Little by little, once the results show value, then you start to enjoy your work ethic. You will be treated with the same respect that you put in yourself.” For Lee, working out goes beyond aesthetics. A core tenant for him is exercising to improve his physical and mental health, and to feel comfortable in his own skin. “I’m always posting photos with my shirt off, but staying fit to me is beyond being topless,” he mentioned. “Through PumpUp I learned that it’s all about being confident within yourself.”
For Lee, PumpUp is more than just a fitness community. It’s a place where others can feel comfortable to share and support each other as they endure struggles and celebrate success. “It’s a blessing to be a part of a movement like PumpUp,” he mentioned. “Strive for your fitness goals! Whether it’s to lose weight, gain muscle, or ‘tone’—I notice. PumpUp members such as @tweetii, @_harleyjade_ and @_marieta_, and everybody else on the app have become like family to me. PumpUp is so welcoming when it comes to feeling uncomfortable with yourself. It’s a great place to be if you’re struggling with bad habits that you fight daily.”
Lee’s Biggest Motivation
“My biggest motivation is myself, because I’m the only one that has the power to give me that push.”
Lee’s Eats “I love aloe drinks and eating oatmeal with bananas. It’s pretty simple!”
Motivational Mantra “This quote from Will Smith: ‘There are two types of people in this world. There are hammers and there are nails. You decide which one you want to be.’” Favourite Workout Routine “I like the circuit training exercises that PumpUp has, as well as the demonstrations that accompany each workout!”
Fun Fact about Lee “I am fun and outgoing! I love to try new workouts. I am Crossfit certified and I have an intense passion for fitness”

I grew up in a household and lifestyle where food and health were key. We were extremely poor, especially when I was very young, but my parents had given their lives to their farm and their dairy cows: this was our livelihood.
My four siblings and I were expected to help, and the amount of help increased as we got older. As a teenager I was throwing around 100 pound square bales each summer and 120 pound bags of grain twice a day, carrying calves up to the barn on my shoulders from the far pastures, pounding fence posts, digging holes, hand hoeing 1/8 acre of garden. We were vegetarian primarily for my first twelve years of life, though I did get to eat Polish sausage from my great grandfather’s meat processing plant, as well as turkeys we raised for thanksgiving. We went trick or treating at maybe eight houses for Halloween, and were allowed the candy for a day or two before my parents upped and burned it in the wood stove. (This happened every year!) Processed foods were not available to me at all as a child unless I was at a friend’s house.
As a child you go through the struggles of wishing you could have what you don’t have, and craving foods your parents don’t want you to eat. You hate your chores and wish you could play video games all day on the weekends like your friends (if you even owned any). But then one day you are an adult.
I grew up and was living on my own, realizing how much I loved to work hard and be physically fit, and how much I loved the taste of wholesome food. As I pursued my four-year degree in the art of Eurythmy, I more and more experienced how much both these things-food and fitness-mattered even as I worked on changing myself on an inner level. The outer strength gave me courage and confidence, the ability to stand upright for long periods of time, to move on a stage to music for 20 minutes without pause. Nourishing food gave me health, the ability to think and take hold of everything in my life, to have enough energy to do so. And I realize now that all of my parent’s choices have come into fruition in me today, as I take the fitness journey and work towards optimum health.
This is only the beginning and the first revelations of a person who sees fitness as an essential part of life. I am completely inspired by others who are on this journey and who show such dedication to health and motivating those who need help. The fitness community on the pumpupapp is a great one to be a part of: it’s positive, fun, confident, supportive and health-oriented. I realize that no matter how poor you are, if you can be a part of such a wonderful group of people, you are truly given wealth a thousandfold~”health is wealth.” Happy journeying.
If there’s anybody who knows about loving herself throughout her fitness journey it’s Whitney. She’s a mother of 2 who has lost 60 lbs so far with the motivation and support of PumpUp! She’s a beacon of light, always brightening the skies of the PumpUp universe with her inspiring posts.
In March 2014, Whitney adamantly put her foot down and firmly set her mind on becoming healthy for herself and for her family! “[After the birth of my son], I was determined to get in shape,” she elaborated. “I began to get more active even before I recovered from the delivery.” Her diet was the first aspect of her lifestyle that changed drastically. “Before PumpUp, my eating was horrible: pizza, macaroni and cheese, cookies, ice cream, fried chicken, you name it!,” she explained. “I’m not talking about small portions. I ate LARGE portions of food.” Since she became a member of PumpUp, Whitney is motivated to work out 5 days a week and incorporates a lot of protein,
vegetables, fiber, and water into diet.
Whitney may have lost dress sizes since the beginning of her wellness journey, but she has gained an entire new outlook on life. “I told myself that by my birthday [towards the end of 2014], I was going to get to 250 lbs (down from 306 lbs) and I did,” she said breathlessly. “I have lost a total of 60 lbs. My journey is still ahead of me. I love the encouragement everyone on PumpUp gives! I have met a lot of people that don’t even know me. They push me harder than my own family!”
Whenever she feels like she’s in a rut, Whitney knows that she can trust her family on PumpUp to help her find the motivation that she needs to succeed. She has been a member of the community since July 2014 and never fails to share purely positive and upbeat posts with everybody on the app. “PumpUp is the best fitness community EVER,” exalted Whitney. “I feel pressured to make everyday count and I’m glad to have met some amazing people on this app! I want to say THANK YOU to everyone what has pushed, supported, and encouraged me on PumpUp to get back on the grind.”
Loving yourself isn’t easy, but Whitney has awesome advice for other PumpUp members who are just beginning their journey
towards self love and self acceptance. “It’s going to take hard work and dedication,” she affirmed. “There will be times when you feel like giving up. If you want it badly enough, you will fight through it! Fight through your bad days! Just fight.”
Whitney hasn’t been alone in her journey. Her husband has lost over 150 lbs himself! Family has remained at the core of Whitney’s priorities throughout her fitness journey. “My biggest motivation is getting healthy and fit for my kids,” she professed. “I’d love to eventually have a body like Jordan Sparks.”

PumpUp member Josephine B (@hey5sos) accomplished so many things in 2014: she lost 14 lbs, fought off bulimia and self-harm, recovered from depression, filled her life with inspiring people, and joined the PumpUp community. She lives in a way that is more fulfilling than she ever could have imagined.
Josephine’s health and wellness journey got off to a rocky start. “My lifestyle before PumpUp was…pretty bad,” she admitted. “I HATED vegetables and loved junk food, candy, sugar, and other things that weren’t good for my health. I’ve had the app for quite some time, but I didn’t use it much at first because I gradually became motivated to work out.” Josephine exercised about once a week, without making any changes to the way she ate. “I used to wake up in the morning, eat toast with Nutella, then potatoes with meat at lunch, and sometimes junk food for dinner,” she explained.
Josephine suffered from deep-seated insecurity issues prior to joining the PumpUp community. “I was bullied when I was younger, and this caused me to hate my body,” she shared. “I was unconfident about the way I looked and felt. I plummeted into deep depression two years ago and I was suicidal.” During this period of time Josephine explained that she had bulimia and would go through long periods of time without eating, restricting her self to 100 calories per meal. “I lost 5 pounds but I was still unhappy,” Josephine confessed. “When I began to work out, I started to feel less depressed and more confident in my body. I spent time with people I love, and FELT HOPE! With the help of the amazing PumpUp community, my family, and my friends, I found strength to start all over again. I now aim to be a fit, strong, and healthier me.” Her ultimate goal for 2015 is to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle: no more restriction, just balance.
Not only has Josephine’s self-esteem improved with the support of the PumpUp community, she has adopted much more holistically healthy habits. “PumpUp has changed my lifestyle a lot,” she emphasized. “During the month of September, I started to get a little bit obsessed with it! I found so much motivation on there and it made me want to start working out to change my body.” Josephine exercises 6 days a week, alternating between different muscle groups and professed that she also changed her eating habits. “I love vegetables now,” she said with enthusiasm. “I cannot go a day without eating them.”
With the help of PumpUp, Josephine lost 14 lbs and hopes to improve her mental health. “I aim to be more confident in myself as I continue along my journey with the PumpUp community,” she asserted. “Above all, I hope to find a place of love and respect for my body by continuing to exercise and eat healthy.”
Her best morsel of advice for those looking to lead healthier lifestyles in 2015 is to actively seek motivation, and stick to it. “Once you’ve got that—be it through inspiring quotes, family members, friends, or an app like PumpUp, you can do anything,” Josephine said. “Use that motivation to find an exercise that you truly love doing, and make that activity your workout.”
In addition to finding inspiration from members of the PumpUp community, Josephine’s biggest source of motivation is her sister. “She’s the reason I began my fitness journey,” she said. “We both wanted to lose weight and we decided to take life in our own hands. My sister lives in New York right now, but we motivate each other from afar, even if we miss each other a lot. Obviously, my PumpUp family also acts as an incredible source of motivation.”
“I love eating frozen yogurt. It’s not that healthy but let’s be honest: it’s so good! We don’t have a lot of places that sell frozen yogurt in France, so when I travel I basically live off frozen yogurt! On a healthier note, I do love fruits and vegetables. My favourite meal would be anything that includes salmon. Water is my favourite beverage. One of my favourite recipes is banana oat pancakes: they have a lot more fibre than regular pancakes!”
“I LOVE motivational quotes. They always motivate me! A few of my favourites are: ‘Do something today that your future self will thank you for,” and “For what it’s worth, it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over again.”
“I like the ab workouts on PumpUp, even though I don’t do them as often any more. I love cardio so I go to cardio classes at my gym”
“I love travelling, it makes me so happy! I love meeting new people and learning about different cultures, food, and places. I always find that I’m most calm and peaceful when I’m travelling.”

Progress: it’s more about the journey than the end result, and PumpUp member @dezireeryonna can confirm!
"I was always overweight. I wanted to be ‘skinny’ so bad that I lived a very unhealthy lifestyle to do so. Don’t ever sacrifice your health. I’m doing it right this time, and so can you."
She lost over 60 lbs of her pregnancy weight, going from 189 lbs to 128 lbs by eating lots of protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, as well as fruits and vegetables. She works out from home with 45-60 mins of high intensity interval training.
Cheer her on! She wins some #MyResolution #PumpUpSwag
PumpUp has its very own #liftqueen and her name is April (@uneekapril is her PumpUp superhero alias, of course). She’s happy, healthy, extremely body positive, and lifts heavy. “I do cardio because I have to, but I lift because I love to,” she confessed. Learn about her incredible journey to recovery from an extreme leg injury and her perfect advice for those looking to lead healthier lifestyles in 2015.
When April broke her tibia, fractured her fibula, and dislocated her ankle in 2009, this event proved to be one the most challenging mental tests of her entire life. “I was completely dependent on others for many months,” she lamented. “I was incapable of doing things on my own, going places, and needed help out of the bathtub every morning.” The feeling of hopelessness consumed her, as acute pain accompanied her every action during the healing process (both during and after physical therapy). “I could feel depression overcoming me,” she recounted. “I wanted to walk again. Be strong again, Hike again. After a year of wearing a cast, then a boot, on crutches, physical therapy, then home exercises, I started to improve.” After the pain began to subside, April was determined to get her lost muscle, flexibility, balance, and mobility back. In the process, she became better and stronger than ever before, both mentally and physically. “I’m stronger than I’ve been my whole life,” she admitted. “Me and my titanium-filled transformer leg.”
Although high school represented a turbulent point in April’s life, she managed to move above and beyond her personal obstacles through the help of exercise and tons of encouragement. “I used to be a size 12,” she further explained. “I felt fat and depressed and wore baggy clothes to cover up myself.” These insecurities slowly melted away when April made the decision to be healthy in college, regardless of her size. She slowly began to incorporate more physical activity into her schedule by lifting weights and hiking. “I LOVED the feeling that lifting gave me, not to mention the tight muscles that I developed,” she stressed. When April began to lift weights with her friend Jeremy in 2002, he taught her everything she needed to know about proper technique and form. This elevated her passion for healthy active living to the next level. “I’m very fortunate to have had some wonderfully knowledgeable people to grace my life…they helped change my life,” she admitted.
Nobody ever messes around with April’s body-positive image. “I got down to a size 8 and I decided that I was healthy and therefore happy,” she affirmed. “I didn’t care what people thought about my big legs or my big butt. If they didn’t like my shape, they could eff-off. I’m proud of my shape and my strength…not to mention my overall health.” She pays attention to the queues that her body gives her and strives to eat healthy, whole foods. This helps her to keep everything in moderation: April knows when to load up on carbs and when to increase her protein intake. For this reason, she encourages others to do intensive research about what is best for their own bodies. “Everyone is different, so find what works for you,” she counselled.
April is a strong advocate of immersing oneself in a community of healthy and like-minded individuals (like PumpUp!). “Find a mentor that you trust and stay away from unhealthy people,” she emphasized. “I have found that they can be like cancer—they seem to poison people around them. Find someone you want to ‘be’ and emulate them.” She also encourages others to hold themselves accountable and to eliminate excuses—patience is the greatest virtue for April. “Change takes time, so try hard to stay dedicated,” she explained. “Your body is capable of amazing things: push it! Training is all mental—push yourself through those mental walls and you will surprise yourself!”
With each and every post, April strives to motivate at least one person on PumpUp to stay on track. She’s been a member of the app since July 2014, after @winnoble convinced her that PumpUp would be a great community for her. His intuition was right in every single way. “I hoped to meet some neat people with similar goals and looked for a community where motivation and encouragement flowed effortlessly in both directions,” she elaborated. “I can say that I’ve definitely found that..and more! I’ve met the most amazing people on here who have truly become my friends: @bellsetters, @mattgmi, @humbleman, and @jerrydonwheeler, just to name a few.” April actually met up with @jerrydonwheeler and trained with him on her birthday! “It was an honour,” she professed. “I hope there are many more PumpUp members who happen to pass by Little Rock, AR and want to lift with me!”
“My PumpUp family definitely motives me. I absolutely motivate myself! My ultimate goal (although not sure it’s attainable) is to have a body like P!NK. Saw her in concert, saw how strong she was, and decided I wanted that.”
“I drink water with lemon, lime or both everyday throughout my workday. My favorite treat is pomegranates, which I have to make myself earn. “

Fun Fact About April
“I am a tomboy completely. I’m tough, I hate shopping, I don’t paint my nails, I won’t wear a dress, and I’d rather be cutting wood with my dad than being pampered at a spa.”
What’s the best advice you can give about being healthy? Reblog this photo and share it in your caption! As Oscar Wilde was quoted saying, “The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never any use to oneself.”
Here’s sandrafitness’s best advice: If you are trying to quit, think about how discouraging it would be to look back and feel like you stopped a wonderful journey. Are you willing to risk that? I did (a couple of times) and I can’t express how happy and proud of myself for pushing through. Go and try harder.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a PumpUp member who creates wittier captions than Francesca P (@limitlesstyle). She’s much more than just a funny scribe: Francesca shines radiantly in the PumpUp spotlight for her truly remarkable and inspiring journey from pain to power, combatting deep depression through the help of exercise and the support of PumpUp’s community. 2015 is her year of enlightenment: the year that she strives to be there for others as fellow members of humanity in the finest, and truest sense of the word.
February 2014 marked the very beginning of Francesca’s fitness journey, though she admitted that she was not as committed to achieve her goals until she found PumpUp in June 2014. “I was able to feel accountable through PumpUp,” she affirmed. “I stumbled upon PumpUp on Instagram and I fell in love with the idea of the app. I never looked back. I found a group of people whom I’ve come to love and respect. They are now my second family and they motivate me daily.” The community embraced her with open arms when she sought support, and she has done nothing but shower other members with words of positive encouragement in return.
Francesca had a tremendous obstacle to overcome when she first began to embrace a healthy lifestyle. “My baby sister was a cross-country runner and fitness enthusiast who lived in Africa, and she was murdered,” told Francesca. “This sent me into a deep depression for 3 years. I rarely left my house and I gained 35 lbs. Now I’m beginning to heal. She’s my biggest motivation.”
Francesca runs to keep her sister’s memory alive, and does so frequently. “I still suffer from depression, and even now and again it tends to creep back up,” she explained. “I know it’ll pass if I just go for a run, no matter how short.” Take a look at Francesca’s schedule: 5km jogs 3-5 times a week, and weightlifting 2-3 times a week. Impressive is an understatement: Francesca went from 187 lbs to 158 lbs since last February. She’s stronger and more determined than ever to spread positivity and to achieve her health and fitness goals.
As she continues along her journey with the PumpUp community, Francesca hopes to inspire and motivate as many people as she possibly can. Anybody on PumpUp can always rely on her posts to brighten up their day. “I want all of my followers, especially those who are 40 and/or are dealing with any kind of loss to see my page and know that they aren’t alone,” she confided. “Believe in yourselves, take this journey day by day, and you will accomplish great things in no time at all.”

New Year’s Resolutions, they are indeed a cast of hope with every New Year that comes; they bring people that extra motivation – “New year, new me.”
I see the promise that comes with a New Year’s Resolution, but I believe that a resolution is something you make permanent. We tend to make a resolution and fall back on it or we try for a while, then we forget, and come up with new resolutions that go through the same circle.
If you can turn your New Year’s resolution into a lifestyle, then you are on the right track. Most resolutions are directed towards health, fitness, and overall wellness – which are ideals that should last, because a healthy lifestyle is the right lifestyle.
My resolution is to become fully vegan and keep bettering myself in yoga, meditation, reading, writing, and drawing; all of which I love and hope to commit myself to. Another resolution that is more personal for me is to look at myself with more admiration and only see beauty, instead of thinking negative thoughts about my body or my appearance.
Your resolution should be one that will help you to see more clearly. Your resolution should be something you’ve wanted to do all your life, if you’ve been telling yourself that you want to draw or play an instrument. Do it. Nothing and nobody can stop you from achieving exactly that. If it’s to lose 10 pounds, do so, but keep eating right and making those healthy decisions. If you say that you’re never going to drink again, that’s amazing, keep that dear to your heart, because it can only benefit you. School, work, family are all important aspects of life, but your happiness and accomplishing goals or changing your life for the better is even more important than anything.
If you’re not doing what you love, you’re not truly living. Set a resolution that is going to help you grow, open your mind, feel healthier, and soften your soul. If we keep our healthy resolutions it can branch off into something larger than life and inspire the next generations to do the same; little by little creating healthier lives everywhere.
We’re really excited to share PumpUp member momma_j’s Favourite Transformation: “This is my Hubby. He completely left his negative ways and bad habits and started a journey that he knew would be the hardest thing he’s ever have had to do. He’s my mirror and I’d be nowhere without him.” They are getting healthy together and momma_j and him both win some #MyResolution PumpUp Swag, keep them pumped!
