Goals are individual, not universal. Even if another person is “stronger” or “faster", your effort is just as valid. Work toward your own goals and defy your own limits. These 15 quotes about daring will challenge you to be a risk taker rather than a risk hater.

When the going gets tough, the tough keep going. They get stronger, they try their hardest, and the learn to thrive in challenging situations. You are tough today. Develop thicker skin and pick yourself up with these quotes about motivation from the PumpUp community.
Define your goals
"My best advice would be to have clear, precise, achievable goals written down, and to know that the reason you want them is for you alone. If it’s to prove something to someone, then they have that power over you." - @balancingforlife
Sacrifice time each day to get to the gym, and sacrifice foods you know won’t help you reach your goals! You have to install these habits and even then, it won’t be easy. Once you decide to change, it will be the best decision of your life! Day in and day out, do it no matter what, until giving up isn’t an option anymore! You have to rise above the doubt in your head. Making this a lifestyle will take time, so don’t get discouraged when you have a setback. Take it one day at a time and you will do great things. - @fitlisa
Notice the small things
Notice the small things that get better. It may be something no one else will notice, but maybe you sleep better, maybe you’re able to get up from your chair easier. Your small victories can conquer any odds that stack against you. - @feat
You don't have to hurt to be healthy
You don’t have to hurt to be healthy. Take it easy. Start with small steps. It is okay to fall off the wagon. Just step up there again! - @inakarr
Be patient for change
Be patient for change. Your head will tell you to stop, give up, and quit, but your body is capable of things you could never imagine! Change will come—you just have to keep going or you will not see the change. Change will come in a matter of time. - @dolphzigglerfan
Don't cheat yourself
You are only cheating yourself if you don’t give 100% every time. But remember: you will be more likely to stick to a routine when changes don’t occur all at once. - @kamailereed
Remember: the brain is a muscle
The brain is also a muscle that you have to push. If you feel like you can’t get that last rep out, tell your brain, ‘I CAN’ and you will. - @missmolly83
Take ownership of your fitness journey
Getting started is the hardest part. Once you see results, that will be what keeps you going. So set reasonable goals (no matter how small) and work towards achieving those and setting new ones each time you achieve them. Above all, take ownership of your fitness journey. It’s your journey and no one can make you do it. You have to want to do it for yourself and not for anyone else. - @kelliem887
Incorporate exercise into your life
Find ways to incorporate exercise into your life for the rest of your life. Find something that you love and just do it. Think about what you want the most versus what you want right now and remember why you started; the time will pass anyway. - @lanalanex3

'Healthy' isn't a weight - it's different for every body. Although Hannah always had a smaller frame, people judged her for it. Comments about her weight gradually undermined her confidence and aggravated her anxiety. "I've had anxiety since 2010, so setbacks aren't uncommon, but they're something I've learnt to overcome with the right mindset and support," she mentioned.
"I've always had to deal with anxiety every day— to the point that it becomes all-consuming," Becca lamented. "[And] before PumpUp, I definitely did not take the consequences of what I was eating seriously."
Take care of how you speak to yourself. You are not a mistake or a problem to be solved. You're capable! Rather than focusing on what you dislike about your body, focus on what you do like. Your capabilities and small achievements will propel you further than you could have ever imagined. We asked the PumpUp community about their best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem during their health and fitness journey and here's what they had to say:
Hate: "I am stupid for making this mistake."
Love: "I am human, I make mistakes. I'll make an effort to do better next time." Remember, you are worth it. - PumpUp member @millybedilly
You have this incredible, infinite power within you that can literally make or break you. Confidence starts from within and not from external things. Once you realize that you have the choice to control your emotions, you will be the champion of your own life! Tap into your power because you can do amazing things! - @plantbasedbabe
Your speed doesn’t matter, forward is forward. Don’t beat up yourself trying to be like somebody else! Your progress is yours and nobody can’t take that away from you. There’s no place to go but forward. You’re still beating the old you, the one who always had an excuse; the one who said 'Tomorrow, I’m eating healthy'; the one who said, 'I’ll hit the gym next week, next summer, next year'. You and only you have the power to make your life extraordinary. Don’t wait for somebody to tell you this and make you see your potential. It’s all on you! Don’t give up. - @daphnec
Even if you go slow, you’re still lapping everyone who’s on the couch. No matter how heavy you lift, how fast or slow you run, how many squats you do, or how often you exercise, it doesn’t matter. you’re trying and making an effort to better yourself, which is a huge step that so many people don’t take -@karak
Be patient, just stay positive about life. Life is hard if you think everything is going to be about and rainbows and happiness. You’re thinking wrong. Change your attitude. Remember that every downhill has an uphill. You just need to change directions and put a little more effort so that push through anything you’re going through. - @marianarobledosegura
Take all the negativity from your life and make it your strength. Follow your dreams & make them a reality. Most of all, believe in yourself because if you don't, no one else will. Surround yourself with positive people who believe in you. Do not strive for perfection but strive for greatness. Write your own story and keep your eyes on your goal. You never know who you are inspiring.
I have always known that it is so important not only to live my dreams, but to encourage others to fulfill theirs. When I was teaching high school eurythmy, choir and gardening in Hawaii, I always worked in this way with my students, to encourage them to take their dreams and goals seriously. There is an importance to the wisdom of parents, but from a teacher's perspective, I've often seen that many parents seem to be trying to fulfill themselves through their children. If this is the case, I think it is wrong, and puts an unhealthy and untruthful pressure on young people. Of course they want to make their parents happy- but what about themselves? The children have to live with themselves for the rest of their life. I had some students who were so depressed and worried because they felt like they had to go to college to please someone, when what they really wanted to do was work with a master surfboard maker or travel the world.
To think your dreams are impossible is often a conception brought through society and education. Older people inform the younger that when you get older, you learn that your ideals aren’t realistic. This is exactly the sort of attitude that got those pessimistic people so unenthusiastic about life. It is not easy to stand up for or live your ideals, sure- but anyone willing to take on challenges in their life WILL succeed. I’m pretty sure life isn’t meant to be easy. We learn the most and gain the most valuable aspects of ourselves when it is not.
The experience one has when you have reached a goal, unfolded a dream, or upheld an ideal close to your heart, is one of the highest feelings of the soul. To have created an intention once, and through life’s work and adventures finally found your way to its fruition, is a glorious and happy moment. It can be simple: one of my dreams since I was a teenager was to design and sew my own wedding dress if I ever got married. My wedding is in a month and I just finished the dress of my dreams. I wasn’t sure if I could even do it, for one wants everything to be perfect for that special moment; but it happened and passed my quality test with flying colors. I cannot wait to stand in it before my future husband, friends, and family, and be humbly proud that I can wear a beautiful garment I created out of 15 yards of silk and 5 yards of cotton lace.
Each of us has so many goals and dreams, of all different sizes, and you just have to figure out when to tackle each one. As you fulfill them, it will give you strength and encouragement, as well as the knowledge that all things are possible when you don’t give up. It’s rarely easy, but it is always worth it. Happiness is the best sustenance for health.

What motivates you to be healthy and active? Our drive to succeed can come from the most unlikely places. Whether your greatest source of inspiration comes from a family member, a friend, motivational quotes or a personal goal, we want to know why you choose to be active and healthy. We quizzed members of the PumpUp community about their biggest beacons of motivation:
"Today's workout is dedicated to one of my classmates who said that if I was so self-conscious about my body, all I had to do was close my mouth and stop eating. She doesn't know how hard I've been working since last year and that angers me! She's exactly the kind of person I shouldn't listen to, and that's what motivates me for #ActiveAugust." - @kikidiaz
"I've hit my heaviest in my life...and highest body fat. But it's okay. It's time to get back on track. I forgive myself and love the skin I'm in, no matter what. I'm thankful to have a body that works. One that has the capability to get fit." -@mcalorie
"What motivates me to work out? Me. I know that whenever I'm feeling down, a workout can help me to feel better. And when I'm feeling super down, it's you PumpUp. You make me feel like a part of something bigger than myself." - @marizardd
"Everyone has their own motivation to work out. Mine is to prove myself and my surroundings that I can really do this. When I first started, people didn't think that I was going to last at the gym. They thought I would give up, because it was what I always did. But NOT this time. This time, I'm proving everybody wrong, including myself. Don't give up!" - @steph_ps
"This is my beautiful daughter. She's 14 years old. As a same sex parent, I am the single most influential person in her life! Every action of mine will impact her one way or the other. She and her brother are my biggest motivation to lead a healthy, active, positive, and disciplined lifestyle! I'm proud to say that they're well-rounded kids, and I know as they grow they will continue to pay it forward and influence others in positive ways." - @limitlesstyle

The act of comparison is an act of violence against the self. Be your own cheerleader. Stop comparing yourself with others and focus on how you can become the best version of you. A fitness community can help you to realize the futility of comparison. Instead, embrace your personal victories and combat your challenges head-on. Don't compare your chapter one to somebody else's chapter 50. Here's a collection of the best motivational quotes that will help you to stop comparing yourself with others.

Words have the ability to pick somebody up or tear somebody down. We all have the opportunity to think about what we are about to say before we say it. The same mouth that shoots out negative words also has the ability to shoot out positive ones. The choice as to which version will come out our mouths will first start from the inside: from our minds and hearts.
Sometimes, mental barriers get in the way of our ambitions. In order to change the mind, we must speak words of power. Phrases like “I can”, “ I will”, and “there is no stopping me” will kick your doubt into the dust. When we identify what the mind is trying to do to us negatively, we are able to take control and take action. This concept can help us to make our minds stronger and help us to speak words of power not only to ourselves, but to others.
If I came up to you and sincerely said, “I believe in you,” you'll probably think that I lost my mind. You'll be wary because I don't know you, nor what you've been through, and yet I'm still insisting that I believe in you. If I was to take it a step further and told you every day that I believe in you, your mind will start to think positively. You will tell yourself, if they believe in me, then I must be doing something positively. You'll start to believe in yourself too.
We are programmed to immediately see negative aspects about ourselves. The negative words that people use to describe us tend to take power over us. We can rein that power back into our hands by using equally effective words. Words like:
NO – I will not believe the negative words that you are saying to me
YES – “I am strong”; “I will prevail”; “I am capable!” “I got this!”
Choose your words wisely and think before speaking. Use those powerful words for good. Speak them loud and speak them proud. Watch the magic happen in your life and those you have the ability to affect. Positive words are effective; positive words are contagious, positive words are powerful!

The temptation to skip a workout might be strong, especially on dreaded Mondays. Don't let it get the best of you. Breathe deep, muster up all the energy you have, and go. The only workouts you'll regret are the ones you didn't do. You'll be so much stronger for it. Here are some great and inspiring quotes to motivate you to get off the couch and slay the daunting workout dragon.
Running moves you forward in more ways than one

You have a choice. You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off your face.
Even if running isn't your thing, don't throw in the towel. Though gym membership retention dips to a resounding low after 6 months, you can be part of the minority who chooses to tough it out. The most effective way to do it is to do it

Always be a first rate version of yourself instead of a second rate version of somebody else

Remove "can't" from your vocabulary and don't be discouraged if you aren't seeing immediate progress in your fitness journey. It isn't about being 'the best', but rather about being consistent. Set a daily goal and make subtle changes from there. Habits will hardwire you for progress. Fitness is not a joke. If you doubt this statement, perform 50 consecutive burpees and you'll soon catch our drift. Although every day of the year can't be April Fool's day, there's always room for a good laugh. Here are a few golden health and fitness e-cards that you can relate to in some way or another on Motivation Monday.
When you get overly competitive on the treadmill
When you feel like you're being watched at the gym

January has come and gone, but what about your goals and New Year’s resolutions? Have you been able to make it to the gym 4 days a week, did you stop eating copious amounts of chocolate, did you stop overusing the word bae? Have you been nicer to your brother and have you been calling grandma at least once a week?
No matter where you are in your fitness/health/personal journey remember this, it is just that, a journey! While there is no overnight magic pill to help us concentrate on our goals or fairy godmother to help make our dearest wish come true I can let you in on a little secret and that secret is motivation.
So what can you do with that? Well you can’t eat it, sleep on it, or take it on dates but you can internalize it. The key to not only getting motivated and (keyword) staying motivated is your mindset. The mind is a powerful thing so be careful what you tell yourself!
Busy schedule, no time to get to the gym? Okay then, no gym it is. But what if no gym turned into a few squats while brushing our teeth or a few sit-ups before crawling into bed?
Throughout the day things will always “come up”. My favorite time to workout is in the morning, I feel refreshed and energized, even if it’s a small workout I can always do a second workout in the afternoon if I have the energy or time. Pinterest has great workouts you can do at home in a matter of minutes! Start small even if it’s just one day a week and build from there. Once you start setting and reaching even the smallest of goals you will automatically be motivated to continue. If you set your goals too high it might turn into a chore and that’s where our motivation drops. Are you a clean the house all in one day type of person or clean up as you go, figure out what works best for you and your mindset!
(Think about what small goals you can set for yourself this week. Don’t set yourself up for failure or disappointment!)
Another way to keep up with your goals is to stay focused! Don’t get distracted or discouraged along the way. To become the best version of yourself requires a little bit of time. You didn’t get to where you are overnight right? It took time to learn those habits or behaviors that you have decided you want to change, so give yourself enough time to unlearn them and to learn a better way instead.
Don’t forget as you are setting and reaching those little goals check them off and keep going, decide if you are moving at a fast enough pace, from here do some self reflection and make a few changes depending on what you think you can handle. Make SMART goals. Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Be good to yourself, you deserve this!
So now that the whole “New Year, New you” craze is over take a few minutes (after reading this) to look at where you are. Are you still on track or did you find yourself wandering of course? Are you acknowledging the little improvements or are you frustrated that big changes haven’t happened yet. Are you bored of your current routine or have you found ways to switch it up? There are only so many ways you can eat eggs right? Wrong! I for one am a huge fan scrambled eggs with asparagus and boiled eggs with lemon pepper seasoning. There are so many oatmeal choices out there, one week I might have brown sugar or add some honey and apples. Eggs and oatmeal for breakfast, yes I’ll admit my basic-ness when it comes to breakfast but I know what works for me and as that chimney guy from Mary Poppins once said ” I does what I likes and I likes what I do”. Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey Chim chim cher-oo.
Same goes for my workout routine, once something stops working for my body, instead of getting frustrated, I try something else.
With us being only a month into the New Year we may not see any home runs but keep working for it, keep looking and what you see a few months from now just might surprise you!
I almost forgot! Another way to stay motivated is to surround yourself with people who have a common goal. The PumpUp community keeps me motivated to continue to live a healthy lifestyle. You can find me on the PumpUp app @jodikayedwards where I post my meals and a few workout tips as well!
