PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem

Saturday-10AM-2.png

Take care of how you speak to yourself. You are not a mistake or a problem to be solved. You're capable! Rather than focusing on what you dislike about your body, focus on what you do like. Your capabilities and small achievements will propel you further than you could have ever imagined. We asked the PumpUp community about their best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem during their health and fitness journey and here's what they had to say: Hate versus Love. Take care of how you speak to yourself // PumpUp's best advice for anybody struggling with low self-esteem

Hate: "I am stupid for making this mistake." Love: "I am human, I make mistakes. I'll make an effort to do better next time." Remember, you are worth it.  - PumpUp member @millybedilly

There’s no place to go but forward. Aicha's journey from deprivation to strength

Aicha's journey from deprivation to strength

When Aicha returned from her study-abroad term in the United States, she made up her mind: she no longer wanted to remain at such a low weight if it meant that her health was being compromised. "In September 2014, I started using PumpUp and in one way or another, it's been so supportive," she shared. "I never had a lot of confidence in myself, but I kept going because other people were motivating me. Posting pictures became a habit."

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours

image1.jpg

I have always known that it is so important not only to live my dreams, but to encourage others to fulfill theirs. When I was teaching high school eurythmy, choir and gardening in Hawaii, I always worked in this way with my students, to encourage them to take their dreams and goals seriously. There is an importance to the wisdom of parents, but from a teacher's perspective, I've often seen that many parents seem to be trying to fulfill themselves through their children. If this is the case, I think it is wrong, and puts an unhealthy and untruthful pressure on young people. Of course they want to make their parents happy- but what about themselves? The children have to live with themselves for the rest of their life. I had some students who were so depressed and worried because they felt like they had to go to college to please someone, when what they really wanted to do was work with a master surfboard maker or travel the world. I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours, too. // bodysoulspiritfitness for The PumpUp Blog

To think your dreams are impossible is often a conception brought through society and education. Older people inform the younger that when you get older, you learn that your ideals aren’t realistic. This is exactly the sort of attitude that got those pessimistic people so unenthusiastic about life. It is not easy to stand up for or live your ideals, sure- but anyone willing to take on challenges in their life WILL succeed. I’m pretty sure life isn’t meant to be easy. We learn the most and gain the most valuable aspects of ourselves when it is not.

The experience one has when you have reached a goal, unfolded a dream, or upheld an ideal close to your heart, is one of the highest feelings of the soul. To have created an intention once, and through life’s work and adventures finally found your way to its fruition, is a glorious and happy moment. It can be simple: one of my dreams since I was a teenager was to design and sew my own wedding dress if I ever got married. My wedding is in a month and I just finished the dress of my dreams. I wasn’t sure if I could even do it, for one wants everything to be perfect for that special moment; but it happened and passed my quality test with flying colors. I cannot wait to stand in it before my future husband, friends, and family, and be humbly proud that I can wear a beautiful garment I created out of 15 yards of silk and 5 yards of cotton lace.

I began to live my dreams. Here's how you can live yours, too. // bodysoulspiritfitness for The PumpUp Blog

Each of us has so many goals and dreams, of all different sizes, and you just have to figure out when to tackle each one. As you fulfill them, it will give you strength and encouragement, as well as the knowledge that all things are possible when you don’t give up. It’s rarely easy, but it is always worth it. Happiness is the best sustenance for health.

The power of positive words : learning to believe in yourself

The power of positive words : learning to believe in yourself

quote4.jpg

Words have the ability to pick somebody up or tear somebody down. We all have the opportunity to think about what we are about to say before we say it. The same mouth that shoots out negative words also has the ability to shoot out positive ones. The choice as to which version will come out our mouths will first start from the inside: from our minds and hearts. Sometimes, mental barriers get in the way of our ambitions. In order to change the mind, we must speak words of power. Phrases like “I can”, “ I will”, and “there is no stopping me” will kick your doubt into the dust. When we identify what the mind is trying to do to us negatively, we are able to take control and take action.  This concept can help us to make our minds stronger and help us to speak words of power not only to ourselves, but to others.

If I came up to you and sincerely said, I believe in you, you'll probably think that I lost my mind. You'll be wary because I don't know you, nor what you've been through, and yet I'm still insisting that I believe in you.  If I was to take it a step further and told you every day that I believe in you, your mind will start to think positively. You will tell yourself, if they believe in me, then I must be doing something positively. You'll start to believe in yourself too.

We are programmed to immediately see negative aspects about ourselves. The negative words that people use to describe us tend to take power over us. We can rein that power back into our hands by using equally effective words. Words like:

NO – I will not believe the negative words that you are saying to me

Or

YES – “I am strong”; “I will prevail”; “I am capable!” “I got this!”

Choose your words wisely and think before speaking. Use those powerful words for good. Speak them loud and speak them proud. Watch the magic happen in your life and those you have the ability to affect. Positive words are effective; positive words are contagious, positive words are powerful!

Habits will hardwire you for progress. Whether you resolve to run for 20 minutes a day, plank for 60 seconds every morning, or read quotes about success after you wake up, do what works for you and be diligent about it.

What happens when you learn to take yourself just as you are

What happens when you learn to take yourself just as you are

Screenshot_2015-03-26-16-26-27.jpg

There is only one you. Take yourself just as you are. No matter how hard we try to turn ourselves into something different, the reality is that we are who we are. The beauty of it is is that we are all unique and beautifully crafted. Being who you are will allow others to see a different perspective on life. It allows for you to show talents that you cultivated for yourself, and somebody else can benefit from it. Cherishing that piece of you will allow others to see that they do not have to act different to be accepted. Challenging the odds takes on a new meaning for somebody who accepts things as they are and for who they are.

Bettering our self-image or our self-esteem is always a great thing. Striving every day to be better than who you were the previous day is a challenge, but it's rewarding. Be cautious: striving to be the best shouldn’t mean that you're trying to be someone different. It's not fair to give off a wrong impression.

The poem below sums up exactly what it means to take yourself just as you are. Others will have no choice but to follow suit. Some won't like it; most will try to change it; few will accept it; all will have to respect it.

Take Me, As I am

Accept Me, As I am

Criticize Me, As I am

Compliment Me, As I am

We are like no other, as we are uniquely designed.

We are like no other, no other in mind.

Live life to the fullest as best as you can.

We are born to live life, Just As I am.

Displaying the true you will not only bring more people your way, it will allow others to see their own self-worth. Who you are will matter. Who you are will be noticed. Who you are will be rewarded. You will be accepted one way and one way only when you learn to take yourself, just as you are.

Give yourself a hug. Too many people forget to do so.

It’s easy to forget how difficult it is to love oneself. The statistics on the State of Self Esteem paint a sombre portrait: 7 in 10 girls believe that they are inadequate in some capacity, be it through their relationships with others, their academic performance, or their appearance. We’re surrounded by images of unrealistic beauty everywhere we go: polished and filtered Instagram images that show us what we don’t have (thigh gap, we’re looking at you) and who we could never measure up to be (are we ever going to be as funny or as Twitter-savvy as the enigmatic Retta? No).

Remember: you have as many hours in a day as Beyoncé, and even she can’t escape the tyranny of Photoshop.  Lines of wisdom and age etched across one of the most celebrated names of the 21st century are smoothed away to oblivion with the meticulous and instantaneous click of a mouse.

It seems like there’s an app for everything. But there isn’t an app that will teach you how to love yourself. Luckily, you can teach yourself how to love yourself. No app. No magic wand. The only thing and person you need is you.

Give yourself an enormous hug, hold on tight, and never let go

  • Love yourself with positive affirmations. Wake up and tell yourself that you are beautiful. Say something over the top; something that you can’t resist giving yourself a smile to. Rather than focusing on what you feel inadequate about, congratulate yourself on something that you’re proud about every morning. Even watch cute puppy videos to restore your faith in humanity (yes, that part of YouTube will instantly make your bleak morning a much brighter place)
  • Nourish yourself with nutritious food. Eat well. Drink well. Drink water! Never punish yourself for eating poorly. Focus on what you did right, and do even better the next day.
  • Immerse yourself in an environment of people who encourage you. Communities like PumpUp are wonderful at doing this! Reach out for help when you need it; loving yourself doesn’t always have to be a lonely journey.
  • Compare yourself to nobody. Make each day an opportunity for self-improvement. Congratulate others and support others, but never ever feel inadequate if you aren’t making progress at the same rate as they are. Everybody has different needs, different goals, different bodies, and different circumstances. What makes you unique already makes you beautiful.
  • Forgive yourself. The past is in the past; let it go! Your future is uncertain, but it’s brimming with possibilities. Build upon your past, learn from it, and grow stronger. It helped shape who you are today.

Why motivation is all about your mindset

This is a post by fashion and fitness blogger Jodi-Kay Edwards. Follow her on PumpUp @jodikayedwards and on her blog, lifestylefinesse.com.

January has come and gone, but what about your goals and New Year’s resolutions? Have you been able to make it to the gym 4 days a week, did you stop eating copious amounts of chocolate, did you stop overusing the word bae? Have you been nicer to your brother and have you been calling grandma at least once a week?

No matter where you are in your fitness/health/personal journey remember this, it is just that, a journey! While there is no overnight magic pill to help us concentrate on our goals or fairy godmother to help make our dearest wish come true I can let you in on a little secret and that secret is motivation.

So what can you do with that? Well you can’t eat it, sleep on it, or take it on dates but you can internalize it. The key to not only getting motivated and (keyword) staying motivated is your mindset. The mind is a powerful thing so be careful what you tell yourself!

Busy schedule, no time to get to the gym? Okay then, no gym it is. But what if no gym turned into a few squats while brushing our teeth or a few sit-ups before crawling into bed?

image

Throughout the day things will always “come up”. My favorite time to workout is in the morning, I feel refreshed and energized, even if it’s a small workout I can always do a second workout in the afternoon if I have the energy or time. Pinterest has great workouts you can do at home in a matter of minutes! Start small even if it’s just one day a week and build from there. Once you start setting and reaching even the smallest of goals you will automatically be motivated to continue. If you set your goals too high it might turn into a chore and that’s where our motivation drops. Are you a clean the house all in one day type of person or clean up as you go, figure out what works best for you and your mindset!

(Think about what small goals you can set for yourself this week. Don’t set yourself up for failure or disappointment!)

Another way to keep up with your goals is to stay focused! Don’t get distracted or discouraged along the way. To become the best version of yourself requires a little bit of time. You didn’t get to where you are overnight right? It took time to learn those habits or behaviors that you have decided you want to change, so give yourself enough time to unlearn them and to learn a better way instead.

Don’t forget as you are setting and reaching those little goals check them off and keep going, decide if you are moving at a fast enough pace, from here do some self reflection and make a few changes depending on what you think you can handle. Make SMART goals. Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Be good to yourself, you deserve this!

image

So now that the whole “New Year, New you” craze is over take a few minutes (after reading this) to look at where you are. Are you still on track or did you find yourself wandering of course? Are you acknowledging the little improvements or are you frustrated that big changes haven’t happened yet. Are you bored of your current routine or have you found ways to switch it up? There are only so many ways you can eat eggs right? Wrong! I for one am a huge fan scrambled eggs with asparagus and boiled eggs with lemon pepper seasoning. There are so many oatmeal choices out there, one week I might have brown sugar or add some honey and apples. Eggs and oatmeal for breakfast, yes I’ll admit my basic-ness when it comes to breakfast but I know what works for me and as that chimney guy from Mary Poppins once said ” I does what I likes and I likes what I do”. Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey Chim chim cher-oo.

Same goes for my workout routine, once something stops working for my body, instead of getting frustrated, I try something else.

With us being only a month into the New Year we may not see any home runs but keep working for it, keep looking and what you see a few months from now just might surprise you!

image

I almost forgot! Another way to stay motivated is to surround yourself with people who have a common goal. The PumpUp community keeps me motivated to continue to live a healthy lifestyle. You can find me on the PumpUp app @jodikayedwards where I post my meals and a few workout tips as well!

MyResolution: Give Advice

What’s the best advice you can give about being healthy? Reblog this photo and share it in your caption! As Oscar Wilde was quoted saying, “The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never any use to oneself.”

Here’s sandrafitness’s best advice:
If you are trying to quit, think about how discouraging it would be to look back and feel like you stopped a wonderful journey. Are you willing to risk that? I did (a couple of times) and I can’t express how happy and proud of myself for pushing through. Go and try harder.
