Where do you turn to when your motivation is low? At the start of her fitness journey, Angela was too intimidated to push herself to the next level. She couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without struggling for breath and was hesitant about joining a gym. "I've always been a jack of all trades, but a master of none in all aspects of my life," she revealed. "Why? Because I was scared. Scared of failing, hard work, and commitment."

How to Get the Most Out of Your Yoga Practice

How to Get the Most Out of Your Yoga Practice

When stepping onto my yoga mat, I remind myself that this is a sacred place. One's mat is where all else ceases to exist. I begin my yoga practice by taking a deep inhale, as I do so, I focus on the air rushing into my lunges, I breathe in positive energy. On my exhale, I blow the air out through my lips and exhale all negative energy out of my body. I like to think of myself as a blank slate when I start my practice. Each day is a new beginning and a new way to mold yourself into the person you aim to be, I begin each day with an open mind and a grateful heart.

4 Do-Able Strategies For Staying Positive During Big Transitions

4 Do-Able Strategies For Staying Positive During Big Transitions

During big transitions, it's pretty common to feel like you're drowning underneath a waterfall of feelings. They can be positive or negative – excitement or anxiety, for example. Most of the time, you're overwhelmed by emotions. At the start of big transitions, you should try your best to remain as calm as possible. Don't consume yourself with other problems or tasks. They may leave you feeling completely drained in a short amount of time. Things have their own way of falling into place. They will just run their course, no matter what our actions are. Take a step back and remind yourself where you are.

3 ways to stay positive after a sports injury

3 ways to stay positive after a sports injury

Self-loathing and denial won’t make an injury go away. If anything, psychological stressors can make recovery more difficult. That's why it's so important to stay positive after a sports injury. When I developed a repetitive stress injury called tarsal tunnel syndrome— similar to carpal tunnel, but on the inner side of my lower leg—I thought that I might never run a competitive long-distance race again.

How a support system drastically improved Lana's mental & physical health

Lana learned that the state of her mental health was tied to her physical health. She began to eat healthier and saw positive changes. “Running became my escape,” she revealed. “I lost weight and I felt amazing. Before PumpUp, I lost about 25 pounds. I was doing good…but I wanted to be great.” Though Lana exercised in moderation, PumpUp really helped her to take her health and fitness to another level.

How Anne learned to truly accept herself and fuel her body

Picture a girl who is working her hardest at the squat rack. She's proudly adorning loudly-patterned calf-high socks. She doesn't have makeup on, her hair is up, and sweat is dripping off of her body. That girl is the most confident girl in the room: she has taken everybody else out of the equation. In this moment, the only thing that matters to her is that she's doing the best that she can with her body. "That girl is me," said Anne, a PumpUp motivator who has come a long way in terms of body confidence and self-acceptance.

Gemma's inspiring recovery journey after a hit and run accident

Gemma's inspiring recovery journey after a hit and run accident

At the start of 2015, Gemma was fiercely motivated to live a healthy lifestyle on her own terms. After she shared her first post with the PumpUp community, her drive to succeed accelerated to new levels. "I started using PumpUp as a way of keeping me motivated," she explained. "When I train, I train on my own. My friends aren't really into health and fitness. With PumpUp, even if you exercise alone, as soon as you share a picture or workout, it feels like the rest of the team is there with you!"

Why Kellie finally felt accepted after she joined a fitness community

Why Kellie finally felt accepted after she joined a fitness community

Though Kellie's fitness journey began prior to joining PumpUp, she didn't have anybody to share her triumphs and challenges with. "I was at that point where I kind of felt lonely," lamented Kellie. "No one in my circle of family and friends understood why I was doing what I was doing. At times, they were negative." Though Kellie did receive motivation from Instagram, she was dismayed that it wasn't a platform that was specifically tailored to fitness. "I really wanted an app that I could join for fitness," she shared.

The power of positive words : learning to believe in yourself

The power of positive words : learning to believe in yourself

quote4.jpg

Words have the ability to pick somebody up or tear somebody down. We all have the opportunity to think about what we are about to say before we say it. The same mouth that shoots out negative words also has the ability to shoot out positive ones. The choice as to which version will come out our mouths will first start from the inside: from our minds and hearts. Sometimes, mental barriers get in the way of our ambitions. In order to change the mind, we must speak words of power. Phrases like “I can”, “ I will”, and “there is no stopping me” will kick your doubt into the dust. When we identify what the mind is trying to do to us negatively, we are able to take control and take action.  This concept can help us to make our minds stronger and help us to speak words of power not only to ourselves, but to others.

If I came up to you and sincerely said, I believe in you, you'll probably think that I lost my mind. You'll be wary because I don't know you, nor what you've been through, and yet I'm still insisting that I believe in you.  If I was to take it a step further and told you every day that I believe in you, your mind will start to think positively. You will tell yourself, if they believe in me, then I must be doing something positively. You'll start to believe in yourself too.

We are programmed to immediately see negative aspects about ourselves. The negative words that people use to describe us tend to take power over us. We can rein that power back into our hands by using equally effective words. Words like:

NO – I will not believe the negative words that you are saying to me

Or

YES – “I am strong”; “I will prevail”; “I am capable!” “I got this!”

Choose your words wisely and think before speaking. Use those powerful words for good. Speak them loud and speak them proud. Watch the magic happen in your life and those you have the ability to affect. Positive words are effective; positive words are contagious, positive words are powerful!

How I finally became happy with my body with the help of PumpUp - Holly's PumpUp Success Story

How I finally became happy with my body with the help of PumpUp - Holly's PumpUp Success Story

Screenshot_2015-06-21-20-47-25.jpg

You can't develop a positive body image from exercise alone. Holly was no stranger to an active lifestyle before she joined PumpUp, but her confidence was at an all-time low. Though Holly trained in classical ballet for over 20 years, something went amiss once she entered the workforce. "I joined PumpUp because I wasn't happy with my body," she confessed. "I was uncomfortable, and I had more body fat than I wanted. I had trouble finding ways of exercise that I felt comfortable with." More ballet classes seemed like the logical answer, but when Holly took a look at herself in the mirrors of her dance studio, she became quickly discouraged. "It depressed me to see how out of shape I became," she lamented. "It seems backwards, because taking ballet class would have only benefitted me. PumpUp was a great way to exercise in the comfort of my own home." How I finally became happy with my body with the help of PumpUp // Veganballerina's success story

Before Holly began her journey with PumpUp, she ate copious amounts of junk food and fast food. "I didn't exercise regularly and I didn't drink enough water," she shared. "My average day consisted of waking up and going to work without eating breakfast. I would drink coffee at work and not eat anything until lunch." Holly used to skip breakfast and opted for high fat meals during lunch and dinner. She was sedentary during her evenings and went straight to bed after work, often watching movies right before she went to sleep.

Once Holly joined the PumpUp community, her lifestyle made a drastic change. She began her journey on PumpUp a few months after her father died of a heart attack in early 2014. "He had type 2 diabetes and I missed him terribly," she said solemnly. "His death made me really aware of the effect that our diet has on our health. It made me more motivated to live as healthy as possible." With the help of PumpUp, Holly eased into the rhythm of an exercise routine that she loves. "I'm now proud to dance in front of a mirror in a leotard," she said proudly. "I maintain a plant-based diet and I drink water frequently. I do yoga, take ballet class, jog, climb stairs, cycle, and I really do enjoy PumpUp workouts — especially those that involve core strength and weightlifting.

How I finally became happy with my body with the help of PumpUp // Veganballerina's success story

Other PumpUp members motivated Holly to find peace with her body. "I want to help motivate people the way others on PumpUp have motivated me," she insisted. "Reading peoples' posts and looking at their progress has been inspiring and informative and has helped me reach my goal of achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I hope to give back in the way that others have given to me."

She advises other PumpUp members to believe in themselves, regardless of where they are along their health and fitness journey. "Confidence grows," she counselled. "Remember that our bodies are all that we really have. No matter how hard reaching our goals seems, sometimes it is worth it. Without our health, we have nothing." The PumpUp community helped Holly find confidence in herself and she encourages others to find a positive forum where they can share about their victories and struggles. "PumpUp is a great, supportive place full of likeminded people - people looking to become a better version of themselves just like you are," she professed.

Holly's Daily Routine

I wake up and get ready for work while my amazing husband makes us smoothies. I drink my smoothie and have coffee at work. For lunch, I eat bananas and oranges, and I drink water all day. I come home, have a healthy snack and do one or a few of my favorite forms of exercise. Finally, my husband and I make a healthy dinner together and eat earlier in the evening than we used to.

Holly's biggest motivation

My biggest motivation is my husband as well as myself.  I love my husband and I love life. I want to lead as healthy of a life as I can for as long as I can. This way, I can have as much time with my husband as possible.

Holly's workout routine

I love PumpUp workouts but I don’t have one favourite. I like to do a different PumpUp workout, focusing on different areas of the body for a short amount of time - about 30 minutes. I like to combine this workout with stretching or jogging or yoga. Aside from that, I love taking ballet class. I go one or two times a week.

How I lost 45 lbs by being kind to my body - Chloe's PumpUp Success Story

Everybody starts somewhere. Chloe's starting point was with the PumpUp community. "I created my PumpUp account around the same time that I began my fitness journey," she revealed. "I never committed to my health wholeheartedly. I did very little physical activity and constantly binged on candy and fast food. After school or work, I'd lie around until my day was over."

Needless to say, Chloe made a drastic departure from the way that she used to live. "Thanks to PumpUp, I'm always on my feet!" she said happily. With motivation and support from the PumpUp community, Chloe commits to working out at the gym at least 5 times a week and is sure to incorporate some kind of physical activity into her day. "I love to eat healthy. When I do splurge, I control my portions and know that there are healthier alternatives," she explained. "I try my hardest to be kind to my body every day."

Chloe lost over 45 lbs since August 2014, overcame depression, and lifted herself up. "I never wanted to live life outside my home," she confided. "I used to feel like I'd rather disappear than to have people see me. Every day is still a struggle, but when I think about how far I've come, I remind myself that I'm much healthier and have more control over my life."  She beams with positivity and spreads messages of self-love with every post that she shares with the PumpUp community. "On PumpUp, I found a relatable source of positivity and motivation," she enthused. "I wanted to find community of people who were going through similar journeys. I needed a place where I could be completely motivated and feel supported. I definitely achieved that after joining PumpUp."

Chloe's best advice for other PumpUp members is to set realistic goals and to take setbacks with a grain of salt. "At the beginning of my journey, my goal was to work out at the gym at least 3 times a week," she said. "I then reached that goal and added another objective. Now, my goal is to work out at least 6 times a week. It's a learning process. It can be tough, but if you hold yourself accountable, you can do it!" Chloe is her own motivation. She strives to get stronger every day and looks at old pictures to put things into perspective. "Don't fight to be like anybody else," she counselled. "Become to be the best version of you."

Chloe's Favorite Exercise

Cardio is great! I love to run, but when I don't feel like running, I cycle. I also love hiking and that definitely gets my blood flowing. Lifting weights is also really fun for me, I love pushing my limits and seeing how far my body can go before I need to stop. Exercising makes me feel stronger.

How PumpUp helped me to become a better personal trainer - Eleanor's PumpUp Success Story

How PumpUp helped me to become a better personal trainer - Eleanor's PumpUp Success Story

Screenshot_2015-05-24-11-09-36.jpg
Not only is PumpUp member @eleanorjane_k a mother of 3 and a personal trainer, she also overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles. This self-professed gym junkie joined PumpUp in 2014 after one of her good friends @mariabellhouse suggested that she'd enjoy it more than other social media platforms. "She was right," said Eleanor. "I post a lot of fitness-related things on social media. Once I joined PumpUp, I knew it would be a better, more suitable, and more positive place to share my posts."
Eleanor nurtured a strong passion for health and wellness ever since she was 15 years old. "I would train at home in my lounge every morning because I was a size 16 (US 12) and miserable with how I looked," she recounted. Three pregnancies later, Eleanor managed to maintain her shape at a size 6-8 (US 2-4) because she's fuelled by her enthusiasm for living a healthy lifestyle. "Training for me goes far beyond aesthetics," she insisted. "It taught me about discipline and commitment. Most importantly, especially because of the help of the PumpUp community, fitness has taught me to love myself for who I am."
Eleanor's PumpUp Success Story
She was thrilled that the PumpUp community was so compatible with her interests. "I still train hard and eat well every day," she explained. "The main difference is that since I joined PumpUp, I have a more positive self-image. I also feel like I have a lot more support and encouragement for my fitness lifestyle. Most of my friends aren't too enthusiastic about fitness." In turn, the PumpUp community's positivity helped Eleanor become a better personal trainer. "I've learned a lot about other people's perspectives from their posts," she continued. "I feel like this has helped me to empathize better as a personal trainer. More importantly, I value my health and my body much more than I did before I joined PumpUp."
It hasn't always been easy for Eleanor to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Developing a positive body image with PumpUp ended up being a particularly important accomplishment for Eleanor. She had to overcome immense hurdles in order to get to where she is today. "Mentally, I've had to overcome low self-esteem, depression, anorexia, and self harm," she confessed. "Physically, I've dealt with endometriosis and SPD during pregnancy. Currently, I'm on and off crutches while I wait for knee surgery. I never let it stop me or use it as an excuse. I train hard now because I love my body, not because I hate it."
 Eleanor's PumpUp Success Story
After receiving so much support from the PumpUp community while she was on and off crutches, Eleanor created the #ReasonsToSmile hashtag challenge as her way of giving back. "I wanted everybody on PumpUp to share a picture of what made them smile, and to give 5 reasons why they do it," Eleanor enthused. Since then, over 100 PumpUp members followed in Eleanor's example by sharing about the reasons why they smile. The success of her hashtag is a testament to the inspirational and supportive nature of the PumpUp community.
Eleanor's best advice
Start small. Small, positive changes are easier to maintain and lead to bigger changes.  Most importantly, be kind to yourself always: No one is perfect.
 Eleanor's PumpUp Success Story
Eleanor's biggest source of motivation
My biggest  motivation is my job and my children. I feel I need to be a  good role model as a personal trainer and as a mother.
Eleanor's Favourite Workout
I love Pauline Nordin's Butt Bible. Jim Stoppani's Bulk and Shred programmes are great as well! Currently, I'm doing a 5 day split in the gym, on top of teaching 5 classes a week!
Fun fact about Eleanor
I have an honours degree in English literature.

What happened when Alyssa found the positivity she needed - PumpUp Success Stories

What happened when Alyssa found the positivity she needed - PumpUp Success Stories

Screenshot_2015-05-20-13-21-07.jpg

PumpUp member @alyssa_a_ford needed a major dose of positivity in her life when she joined the app in November 2014. "I started to use PumpUp because it is such a positive place to be. It's an environment that is inspiring and it is something that I've always wanted to be a part of," she said gleefully. Alyssa wanted a rapid departure from the habits that she adopted in her younger years. "We ate whatever we wanted...all the junk food and soda," recalled Alyssa. "I ate like a piglet. Though my family grew to be more health-conscious, I only exercised because I was enrolled in sports. I wasn't very competitive at them. Besides walking around, I didn't do much. I didn't really care before."  What happened when Alyssa found the positivity she needed | PumpUp Success Stories

Once Alyssa joined the PumpUp community, she gained the motivation that she needed to push her limits as far as exercise was concerned. "Everyone on PumpUp is so nice, helpful and inspiring," she mused. "It's somewhere that anybody can go to if they need motivation. It's amazing what we can do if we work together." Alyssa indeed worked together with the PumpUp community to achieve all sorts of health and fitness goals. She became much more health-conscious and fell in love with running. Not only does she strive to visit the gym every day for at least 45 minutes, Alyssa began to incorporate short runs after her workouts. "I accomplished quite a lot on PumpUp. I lost 25 pounds and began to love my body and treat it the way it should be treated," she shared. "I have gained confidence, which I never thought was possible. I truly love PumpUp and the family it creates for anybody who takes the time to reach out and ask for help. I hope to inspire others and help them when they need it."

Her best advice for others looking to lead a healthy lifestyle is to be persistent. "I'm a small 5'2 girl at 115 lbs," she began. "I weighed 150 lbs at my heaviest and I was a train wreck. Now I take my motivation from what I want to achieve." Alyssa particularly likes to draw inspiration from motivational quotes. Lucky for her, PumpUp has a wellspring of quotes and photos that encourage others to lead a healthier lifestyle.

More recently, Alyssa has been shaving a lot of time off of her running pace. She can now run a mile at a speed of 6 minutes and 40 seconds and tracks all of her progress on the app. "Sweating makes me feel confident. I love the way I feel so accomplished after every workout," she said emphatically.

Motivational Mantra

My quote is a verse from Shakespeare: "And though she be but little, she is fierce." This is part of who I am and is my motivation.

Alyssa's Meals

My breakfast consists of a granola bar or granola mixed with  either yogurt or milk.  The food that I eat is mainly organic. I do eat gluten free often and I do not drink dairy unless it is my only option. I prefer almond and coconut milk.

Biggest motivation

My biggest motivation is my boyfriend. He is loving, caring and can be a bit of a know-it-all. However, he helps me to achieve things I didn't believe I could do. This man pushes me to do my best and never sell myself short. (Although he is always making jokes about my height!!)

Why Success Isn't Measured in Pounds | Transformation Tuesday

Why Success Isn't Measured in Pounds | Transformation Tuesday

Plank-17.png

When Julia began her fitness journey more than one year ago, she professed that she was just a girl hoping to lose weight. After she joined the PumpUp community, she found so much more. "I may be 18 kilograms lighter, but I gained so much throughout this journey," she enthused. "The people I met and the knowledge and confidence that grew within me have changed my life. I was wrong when I thought it was all about weight. Thank you my PumpUp fam!" Lately, Julia has been working hard by logging her Nike Training Club workouts on PumpUp. She feels stronger, more agile, holds static positions for longer, and hardly pauses during her workouts. She's pushing herself out of her comfort zone and she has her PumpUp family to cheer her on as she makes stellar progress. It dawned on Julia that she could potentially be her own greatest source of motivation. "The moment I realized that I was the one who needed to believe that it was possible for me to change was probably the best in my journey," she admitted. "Having a fitness community and amazing friends on PumpUp who support you and believe in you is important and so motivational. But first, YOU need to believe in yourself if you want to achieve something. I really made a huge step when I understood how amazing the power of the mind was!"

How Julia realized that success isn't measured in pounds

Non-scale victories have proven to Julia that success isn't measured in pounds. "A year ago, I would have never thought that this kind of outfit would look good on me," she insisted. "I used to let my pretty friends wear the pretty things, and wearing a dress or a skirt wasn't an option for me. Even though I didn't buy this outfit, the fact that I gave it a try and felt good in it made me realize that I made a huge step. I want to thank everybody on PumpUp who made this possible for me. [They] are amazing."

Keep Julia pumped on the app @juliamaria! When was the moment that you realized that success isn't measured in pounds. Share the stories behind your progress with the hashtag #ShowMeTheMay on the PumpUp app!

What happens when you learn to take yourself just as you are

What happens when you learn to take yourself just as you are

Screenshot_2015-03-26-16-26-27.jpg

There is only one you. Take yourself just as you are. No matter how hard we try to turn ourselves into something different, the reality is that we are who we are. The beauty of it is is that we are all unique and beautifully crafted. Being who you are will allow others to see a different perspective on life. It allows for you to show talents that you cultivated for yourself, and somebody else can benefit from it. Cherishing that piece of you will allow others to see that they do not have to act different to be accepted. Challenging the odds takes on a new meaning for somebody who accepts things as they are and for who they are.

Bettering our self-image or our self-esteem is always a great thing. Striving every day to be better than who you were the previous day is a challenge, but it's rewarding. Be cautious: striving to be the best shouldn’t mean that you're trying to be someone different. It's not fair to give off a wrong impression.

The poem below sums up exactly what it means to take yourself just as you are. Others will have no choice but to follow suit. Some won't like it; most will try to change it; few will accept it; all will have to respect it.

Take Me, As I am

Accept Me, As I am

Criticize Me, As I am

Compliment Me, As I am

We are like no other, as we are uniquely designed.

We are like no other, no other in mind.

Live life to the fullest as best as you can.

We are born to live life, Just As I am.

Displaying the true you will not only bring more people your way, it will allow others to see their own self-worth. Who you are will matter. Who you are will be noticed. Who you are will be rewarded. You will be accepted one way and one way only when you learn to take yourself, just as you are.

All you need is a pen and paper to make a difference. That's the mission of Operation Beautiful, a project determined to end negative self-talk through the medium of positive, thoughtfully-placed post-it notes. The movement recognizes that there is extraordinary power behind random acts of kindness, as good deeds have the tendency to spread like a contagion. If you feel like doing a good deed on Motivation Monday (or any day, for that matter), consider taking up one of these body positive art projects:

A Body Positive Sticky Note Wall

Body positive sticky notes can make a world of difference for somebody's confidence. Consider this a Motivation Monday project for yourself

This is an example of body positive art that PumpUp member @midge623 found at her local gym. It's a wall dedicated to sharing positive thoughts, quotes, and messages about body image.

Thoughtfully-placed Post-It Notes

The positive white-board project

Body positive wall art

In this project, participants were asked to sit in front of a white-board while others were asked to write positive qualities about the seated person. Each participant was not allowed to look at what was being written until the photograph was taken.

Something borrowed : library post-it notes

Artist Augustina Woodgate 'poetry bombs' thrift stores by sewing poems into articles of clothing. The same can (theoretically) be done for body positive quotes.
