Spotlight Series: Zack

At PumpUp, we’re very proud to see our members make giant leaps forward with their personal health and fitness by working out with the PumpUp app.
We recently spoke with Zack S. from Waterloo, Ontario about his experience working out with PumpUp. Here’s what he had to say:

I have been using PumpUp for just under 6 months. It is a great tool for planning and showing me exactly what to do in the gym and giving me tips if I’m not sure how to properly execute certain exercises. 

Prior to using PumpUp, I hadn’t really been going to the gym. I was doing a lot of walking, back and forth on campus, but I knew that wasn’t enough. Even if I did go to the gym, I would tend to do the same exercises each time, or I would just give up after around half an hour. As a student, my life is always on the go, be it with school work, meeting with professors, my job off campus, etc… 

In years prior, I had gained massive amounts of weight during the school year. I thought I was eating healthy throughout the day, but that clearly wasn’t the case. Forget the freshman 15, I entered my 1st year of university weighing 195 pounds.I left university that school year having gained 40 pounds and now weighing 235 pounds. I didn’t like the way I looked at all. I did lose some of the weight in the summer, but could not lose it all. By the time I had finished my third year of university, I was back at this weight of 235 pounds. I decided I was finally going to do something about it. 

I had thought about a personal trainer, but I didn’t want to spend the money, nor did I think it would be motivating enough for me. I tried working out at home with the equipment I have, but just like in previous trips to the gym, I would give up. Finally, my friend Phil told me about the PumpUp App. It really is like having a personal trainer in your pocket. I can set my workouts to my desired level. I can work out for as long or as little as I want, depending on my schedule. It really just caters to my needs as a user. The app has a large database of exercises ranging from core, to arms, to legs and keeps updating itself based on your progress. Never again will I continuously do 2 sets of bicep curls and think that I’m finished. The app keeps challenging me to lift more weight in an exercise or get that one or two extra reps in. 

I started using PumpUp in May of this year, at the time, I mentioned I weighed 235 pounds. I am very proud to say that I currently weight 197 pounds and I owe a great deal of thanks to this app. I have so much more energy, as well as confidence in myself. I feel the best I have in a good long time. I am more focused now on maintaining a healthy lifestyle than I have ever been in so many years.

So, thank you PumpUp! Fitness really just got personal.

Spotlight Series: Warren

Recently, we spoke with Warren C. from Calgary, Alberta about his experience working out with PumpUp. Here’s what he had to say:

I have been using the PumpUp app for about 4 months now. I find it’s an excellent way to keep me motivated, structure my workouts, and it’s allowed me to become a more healthy individual.

I’ve been going to the gym regularly for a number of years. However, as I got older and moved on to the “real world,” my daily routine changed considerably due to my career. As an accountant, sitting at a desk for over 8 hours a day became the norm, and I was getting very little exercise in my job life. Towards my later 20’s and early 30’s I had put on over 35 lbs due to a more sedentary lifestyle. 

In December of 2012 I received a wake-up call. I had lost 25 lbs without really changing my lifestyle, all in only 3 months. I asked myself the question “how can I being losing so much weight without eating differently or exercising more than usual?” I went to the doctor and sure enough there was something wrong with me… diabetes. The first thing the doctor recommended was a strict exercise routine, and wholesale change in my diet. I first thought of getting a personal trainer, but they can be very expensive, so I thought perhaps there was an app for my phone that I could use.  That was when I came across the PumpUp app. I loaded it onto my phone, and have been using it ever since.

I love this app because it almost forces you to complete an entire workout.  My biggest problem in the past was that I would have “that’s good enough” syndrome.  I would do 2 sets of an exercise, and then skip the others because “that was good enough”. The workouts created by PumpUp establishes a structure that allows you to hit all your goals for that workout and keeps you motivated to finish. There are tons of different exercises available that are totally interchangeable, that will keep your workouts fresh and engaging… avoiding the dreaded “plateau”.

Another feature I love is that it also has workouts designed for those days where you can’t make it to the gym and you can only work out using your own body weight. Like most of us, I don’t have 2 hours to work out per day, so it’s important to maximize the workout in the time you have available, and this program allows you to do that.

Today I am focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle in order to keep my diabetes in check. Since using PumpUp, my cardio endurance has increased, I have gained about 10 lbs back in muscle, have kept my blood sugar under control and ironically enough, am feeling better than I have in years. 

Pump Up is like having a personal trainer in your pocket everywhere you go and I am a big fan!

Spotlight Series: Stephanie

Recently, we spoke with Stephanie G. from Waterloo, Ontario about her experience working out with the PumpUp app. Here’s what she had to say:

I first heard of PumpUp after meeting one of the founders for the first time. Right after our first conversation, I searched his LinkedIn profile to find out more about his company… it was love at first sight! 

As an avid runner, I’m always looking for ways to add more excitement to my workouts. The first time I opened the app, I created multiple workouts and saved them so they were ready to go for the week. 1 week of using PumpUp, quickly turned into 2, which turned into 3 and so forth. I fell in love with the diversity of exercisesmy favourite part is the ability to create a workout (that worked) without using any equipment. 

I quickly found myself using PumpUp everyday - in the gym, at home, in my backyard, while on vacation, etc. I literally carried a personal trainer in my pocket wherever I went!

At the end of all this, I wanted to put the workouts to the test. Before I started using PumpUp, I attended my first TRX class.. and, I sucked. It was painful, I was miserable and definitely not up for the challenge. After 3 weeks of using PumpUp, I decided to try out that TRX class again. Not only was I keeping up with the class, I was increasing my levels of complexity and difficulty — never once did I want to run away.

As I get ready to run my 5th half-marathon this year, I can’t wait to use PumpUp to supplement my running and increase my overall body strength!

Spotlight Series: Yulia

Recently, we spoke with Yulia V. from Halifax, Nova Scotia about her experience working out with the PumpUp app. Here’s what she had to say:

For years I have tried to attend the gym regularly, kept buying gym passes and memberships, and ended up dropping out of gym after a month or two. I think there was a combination of factors contributing to it, such as lack of time, cost of gym membership, and the last but not the least being conscious of my body and not feeling comfortable around the “sportsy” types. When I was working out on my own, I often felt unwell after the workout, but I could not justify the expense of a personal trainer.

I am 45 years old and started putting on weight recently, which led to other things, including pain in my joints and shortness of breath. I decided to work towards improving my health, but was not quite sure where to begin. I started with changing my eating habits and switching to a healthier food. That brought some results - I lost about 10-12 pounds in 3 months. However, it did not improve my body to the extent I wanted, as there was no muscle building up.

I found an article about PumpUp in the Chronicle Herald and decided to give it a try. I downloaded the app and programmed in the simplest option - no equipment, 30 minutes’ exercise, aim at building muscle. (I was actually very surprised when the app produced a workout program for me!) I have been using PumpUp for a month and a half now, working out at home 3 times a week. The results are noticeableI am not gaining weight, I feel lighter on my feet and can walk for longer periods of time, and my core muscles have improved.

I see PumpUp as a wonderful, easy to follow and affordable workout option - "a personal trainer in your pocket!" I really enjoy the fact that demonstrations are available for each exercise. I got myself a yearly subscription several days ago. Thank you very much for this great app!
